しかしその後、マスク氏に買収されたTwitterは認証済みバッジの有料化を決定し、2022年11月に月額7.99ドル(約1060円)、日本ではiOS・Androidの場合月額1380円、ウェブサイトからの登録の場合月額980円で提供されているサブスクリプションサービス「Twitter Blue」の特典として、ツイートの編集機能などに加え、認証済みバッジの付与が追加されました。

Twitterは2023年3月23日に、利用者が本人であることを示す「認証済みバッジ」に関して、旧式のアカウント検証プログラムを終了し、2023年4月1日からはTwitter Blueの利用者のみが認証済みバッジを維持できると発表していました。

これに対して、ニューヨーク・タイムズの広報担当者が「ニューヨーク・タイムズはTwitterアカウントの認証にお金を払う予定はありません」と述べ、認証済みバッジの削除を受け入れることを表明したことをCNNのレポーターであるオリバー・ダーシー氏が報じています。

"We aren't planning to pay the monthly fee for verification of our institutional Twitter accounts," a spokesperson tells me.
また「ニューヨーク・タイムズの記者が個人でTwitter Blueに加入したとしても、記者本人に払い戻しを行うことはありません」と付け加えています。

一方で認証済みバッジをまとめて確実に削除することは困難だとされており、マスク氏は「Twitter Blueへの支払いを拒否する姿勢を表明しない限り、認証済みバッジの削除に数週間の猶予を与えます」と述べています。
