一時は20ポンド紙幣の顔にもなった、文句なしの英国代表。ウースターとかいう田舎出身で、カトリックで（イギリスでは聖公会優勢）、四十代までほぼ無名ながらも、姉さん女房アリスに支えられ、《エニグマ》以降国内外で名声を確立した。
なお、仕事に取り掛かる前には全然関係ないことで時間を潰してグズグズしてるタイプで、娘キャリスによれば、妻の死後その傾向はひどくなったという。ワイやんけ！
