連作集Songs of Farewell《別れの歌》の第一曲目。

上梓されたのは第一次世界大戦のさなか。当時パリーは教え子の多くを戦死や負傷で失っており、戦争で乱れた現世に絶望し、死者の向かう天の国に平和を見出す意図があったと考えられている。
2022年に行われた英国女王エリザベス２世の葬儀でも歌われた。
