2021年4月9日、開発者向けのコミュニティサイトXDA Developersが「Googleショッピング」アプリに提供終了を通知するメッセージを含むコードが追加されたことを報じました。以下が実際のコード。「The app is unavailable right now, but you can continue shopping on shopping.google.com(現在アプリは利用できません。利用したい場合は、shopping.google.comにアクセスしてください)」という一文が含まれています。

実際に、アプリ版Googleショッピングを利用すると「問題が発生しました」という一文が表示されていることが確認されていました。さらに、このタグに含まれる「sunset」という文字列がGoogleがアプリを廃止するときに用いるものだったことから、Google系ニュースを主に取り扱う9to5GoogleがGoogleに問い合わせを行ったところ、Googleが直々に「2021年4月中にアプリ版Googleショッピングのサポートを終了します。アプリがユーザーに提供する全機能は、ウェブブラウザで利用可能です」と通達してきたとのこと。
アプリ版とウェブブラウザ版のGoogleショッピングは、UIの一部を除けばほぼ同等の機能でしたが、アプリ版はGoogle製モバイルアプリフレームワークのFlutterで開発されていました。そのため、アプリ版の開発を取りやめてウェブブラウザ版に一本化することで、エンジニアリングリソースを節約する狙いがあるのでは、と9to5Googleは指摘しています。
