Twitter上で著名人になりすます行為を予防するために、Twitterは「認証済みアカウント」を導入し、Twitterによって本人と確認されたアカウントに認証済みを示す青いチェックマーク「認証済みバッジ」がつけられます。しかし、この認証済みアカウントの認証基準を巡ってアメリカで大きな批判が集まっており、事態を重く受け止めたTwitterは認証プロセスを一時停止して、認証基準の再設定作業が行われてています。新基準によっては、すでに認証されたアカウントの認証済みバッジが削除されることもあるそうです。
Twitterのユーザーネームは自由に指定できるため、著名人になりすます「なりすましアカウント」の問題がつきものです。そこで採用されているのが「認証済みアカウント」で、Twitterが本人であることを確認したアカウントには青色のチェックマークがつき、なりすましアカウントではないことが明示されています。
本来は著名人へのなりすましを防止するための認証済みアカウントですが、そもそもなりすまされる可能性のあるアカウントは、発言に影響力のある人物や組織であるのが一般的であることから、認証済みバッジ自体が「選ばれし者」という意味にとらえられがちで、一種のステータスシンボルとして機能しているという実態がありました。実際、SNSの本人認証マーク付きアカウントがブラックマーケット上で売買されているという実態もあります。
その認証済みアカウントの基準について議論が巻き起こるきっかけとなったのは、白人至上主義であることを自他共に認めるJason Kessler氏のTwitterアカウントに認証済みアカウントを示す青色チェックマークがついたこと。
Kessler氏はすぐに「見ろ、ついにTwiterに認証されたぜ。労働者階級の白人至上主義者では唯一の認証済み取得者にちがいない」とツイートしています。

Kessler氏は白人至上主義というイデオロギーに基づいて過激な発言をすることで知られている人物ですが、以下のツイートには、2017年8月に白人至上主義に抗議するデモ中に暴走車にはねられて死亡したHeather Heyerさんを「嫌悪すべき肥満の共産主義者」とののしるツイートをしていることが批判されています。

Kessler氏のTwitterアカウントに青色チェックマークがつくと、「白人至上主義者にお墨付きを与えるとは何事か！」という猛烈な批判がアメリカ中でわき上がりました。

批判を受けてTwitterはKessler氏の認証済みバッジを除去。さらに、事態を重く見たTwitterは、アカウントの認証プロセスを一時停止するとともに、認証済みバッジの付与基準を見直すことを表明しました。

Twitterは火消しと新基準の策定に急ピッチで取り組んでいますが、新しい認証基準を作るという方針については、「なぜ発言や行動によって本人であることの認証を取り消すのか？」という、認証済みアカウントは「なりすましを防ぐ本人であることの確認」が目的であるという根本的な主旨を見落としているのではないかという批判や、「Twitterはエリートクラブをつくるつもりなの？」という新基準によるTwitterのお墨付きは、あらたなステータスシンボルの創出にすぎないという批判が上がっています。
