「disastrous」の語源は、ラテン語の「disastrum」である。「disastrum」は、占星術において凶兆とされる、特定の惑星の出現を指す単語「dis-astrum（悪い星回り）」に由来している。「悪い星回り・凶兆」という意味が時を経て進化し、後に災害や惨事を表す形容詞として使用されるようになった。16世紀後半頃から、「disastrous」という単語として用いられるようになった。また、小惑星という意味の英語の「asteroid」も同じ語源である。
