AXIN1遺伝子は、RGSドメイン(英語版)とDIX(dishevelled and axin)ドメインを持つ細胞質タンパク質をコードする。AXIN1タンパク質は、APC、β-カテニン、GSK3β(英語版)、PP2、そして自身と相互作用する。このタンパク質はWntシグナル伝達経路の負の調節因子として機能し、アポトーシスを誘導することができる。このタンパク質の一部は、単体構造そして他のタンパク質との複合体の結晶構造が解かれている。この遺伝子の変異は、肝細胞癌、肝芽腫、類内膜腺癌、髄芽腫と関係している。この遺伝子には異なるアイソフォームをコードする複数の転写バリアントが同定されている[6]。
