「ローランの歌」全48回の全訳が終わったので，今度はギリシア・ローマ神話を読んでいきます。「プロジェクト・グーテンベルク」に Greek mythology などと打って検索し，以下の本にしました。1913年の本なので，100年以上前ですね。www.gutenberg.org
では早速訳していきましょう。ユピテルのようにローマ神話での呼び名となっていますので，カッコ内にギリシア神話での呼び名（ゼウス）を記します。なおギリシアはギリシアと書いてギリシャと読む慣用表記です（ペルシアも同様）。文字通り読まないようにしましょう。
Chapter I In the Beginning
In the days of long, long ago when men built altars, and burned sacrifices, and worshiped their gods in temples of pure white marble, Jupiter, the greatest of the gods, sat upon his throne on high Olympus and looked down upon the doings of men. The topmost peak of Mount Olympus was covered with clouds,—so high it was above all the hills of Greece,—and its slopes were thickly wooded. Just how high the mountain really was could only be guessed, for no man had dared to climb even as high as the first cloud line; though the story goes that once upon a time a wandering shepherd, looking for a strayed lamb, had ventured far up the mountain side and had soon lost his way.
遥か昔の時代，人々が祭壇を築き，生贄を燃やし，純白の大理石の寺院で神々を崇拝していた頃，最も偉大な神ユピテル（ゼウス）はオリュンポスの山の玉座に座り，人々の生活を見下ろしていた。オリュンポス山の頂は雲で覆われており（ギリシアの全ての山々よりも高かった）坂には木が生い繁っていた。実際どれほど高かったのかは推測の域を出ない。最初に雲が掛かっているところへすら行こうとした人間はいなかったからである。但しこんな話がある。あるとき道に迷った子羊を探して彷徨った羊飼いが山腹を遥か高くまで上っていき，間もなく道に迷った。
・look down on には「軽蔑する（despise）」の意味もありますが，ここは「見下ろす」ですね。
・a strayed lamb「迷子になった子羊」となっていますが，a stray lamb でいいでしょう。
・この up the mountain side の up は副詞ではなく前置詞ですね。up the river「川の上流へ」のように言えるわけです。
He groped about blindly, as the mists began to thicken all around him, and the sound of his own footsteps terrified him in the dreadful silence that seemed to be suddenly creeping over him. Then a mighty tempest broke over his head, and the mountain shook to its very base. From the hand of wrathful Jupiter fierce thunderbolts were hurled, while the lightning flashed and gleamed through the darkness of the forest, searching out the guilty mortal who had dared to climb too high.
霧が周りを厚く覆い始めたこともあって彼は闇雲に手探りで進み，突然自分に忍び寄ったように思えた恐ろしい静けさの中で彼は自身の足音に怯えた。すると大嵐が頭上で巻き起こり，山は麓まで震えた。激怒したユピテルの手からは激しい雷霆が放たれ，稲光は森の暗闇のあちこちを照らし，余りにも高く登って来た罪深い定命の者を探していた。
・grope は「手探りで進む」。「まさぐる」という意味もあり，grip「掴む」と語源的関係のある語です。
・hurl は「放り投げる」という意味です。プロ野球に「ハーラーダービー」（投手の最多勝争い）なんてありましたね。
・mortal は「（いつかは）死ぬ運命にある」という意味で，反意語の immortal は「不死/不朽/不滅の」です。また the Immortals「不滅の者達」は「ギリシア・ローマ神話の神々」を意味します。
No human eye had ever seen the glories of Olympus, no human foot had ever stepped within its sacred halls, where the ceiling was of gold and the pavement of pearl and the thrones of the gods shone with a thousand glittering jewels. Here
"the gods have made,
So saith tradition, their eternal seat;
The tempest shakes it not, nor is it drenched
By showers, and there the snow does never fall.
And in the golden light that lies on all
Day after day the blessed gods rejoice."

人間の目はオリュンポスの栄えある光景を目にしたことはなく，人間の足はその聖なる広間に踏み入れたことはなかった。広間の天井は金でできており，敷石として真珠が使われており，神々の座る座は一千ものキラキラした宝石で輝いていた。このようにある：
「神々は作った，言い伝えは言う，彼らの永遠なる玉座を
嵐にも揺るがず，雨にも濡れず，決して雪も降らず
そして全てに降り注ぐ金色の光の中で
来る日も来る日も祝福された神々は楽しんだ」（オデュッセウス）
・saith は says です。また tradition は「伝統」の他に「伝承，言い伝え」の意味も押さえておきましょう。
・rejoice「喜ぶ」は joy と関連する語です。×rejoyce は廃れた綴りです。
Of the life that was lived among the dwellers on Olympus, not even the poets could claim to know; but sometimes a tired soldier dozing by his camp fire dreamed dreams of this wonderful country where the immortal gods walked by night and day; and sometimes a lonely fisherman, looking across the blue waters of the Mediterranean to the crimsoning sunset, saw visions of youth and beauty and life that lasted for ever and ever and ever.
オリュンポスの住人達が送った生活については，詩人たちすらも知りようがなかったが，時にはキャンプの焚火のそばで疲れてうたた寝をしている兵士が，神々が日夜行き来しているこの素晴らしい国の夢を見たりもした。また時には孤独な漁師が，地中海の青い海のかなたに赤々と沈む太陽を眺めながら，若者や美女，また永遠に続く生活の映像を見たりもした。
・life には「生命，生物，生活」など様々な意味があって訳すとき厄介になり得る語ですが，今回は that was lived という大きなヒントがあります。これは live a life「生活を送る」の受け身ですね。
He lived a happy life.「彼は幸せな生活を送った」
→the happy life (that) he lived「彼が送った幸せな生活」
→the happy life (that) was lived by him「（同上）」
・dream a dream「夢を見る」は英文法で同族目的語と言ったりします（fight a battle，live a life など）。基本的に目的語に形容が付き，今回は of 以下が形容しています。
・the Mediterranean「地中海」は Medi「中」，terra「土地」に注目すれば意味及び綴りが覚えやすいです。
It was long before the memory of man that the gods first came to live on Mount Olympus, and it was still longer ago that all the great powers of the universe fought with each other for the right to rule the world. In this mighty war, which rent the very heavens with the crash of battle, Jupiter at last conquered all his jealous enemies, and made himself ruler of the gods and of the world. On that day he established his dwelling place on Mount Olympus, and set the earth below him for a footstool.
神々が初めてオリュンポス山に住み始めたと人が記憶するまで長くかかったが，宇宙の大いなる様々な力の全てが，世界を支配する権利を求めて互いに争ったのは更に昔のことだった。戦いの衝突で天そのものを引き裂いたこの激しい争いにおいて，最終的にユピテルが全ての嫉妬する敵に打ち勝ち，神々と世界の支配者となった。その日に彼はオリュンポス山に居住地を築き，足下の大地を足載せ台にした。
・come to-V は「V するようになる」です。to-不定詞の to とは前置詞の to に他ならず，come to-V とは「V するに至る」ということでしょう。
・fight with...「……と戦う」と fight for...「……を求めて戦う」が組み合わさり fight with A for B「B を求めて A と戦う」となっています。
・rent は rend「引き裂く」の過去形です。スカイリムで習得するシャウト「ドラゴンレンド（Dragonrend）」は空中にいるドラゴンを地上に落とす便利なシャウトです。
From his throne in the high heavens he looked down upon the kingdoms that he had portioned out to each of his brothers; and he saw Neptune, the god of the sea, driving through the waves his chariot drawn by huge, misshapen sea-beasts that beat up the thick white foam until it glistened on the sea-king's beard and on his crown of shells and seaweed. The other kingdom was so far away that even the all-seeing eyes of Jupiter were strained to catch any glimpse of the shapes that moved noiselessly there, for this was the realm of Pluto, god of the underworld, that dread country of darkness and unending gloom, where no ray of sunlight ever came, and where the sad spirits of the dead wept for the lost world of love and light and laughter.
空高くにあるその玉座から，ユピテルは兄弟達それぞれに分け与えた諸王国を見下ろした。そして彼は海の神ネプチューン（ポセイドン）が，巨大で不格好な海の獣に引かれた戦車で波の間を進んでいるのを眺めた。その獣は厚い白泡を打ち上げ，その泡は海の王の髭と，貝と海草でできた王冠の上で輝いていた。もう一つの王国は余りにも遠くにあったので，全てを見通すユピテルでも，そこで音もなく動く姿形を少しでも見るためには，目を凝らす必要があった。というのもこれは地下世界の神プルートー（ハデス）の国であり，暗闇と終わりなき陰気さで溢れる恐ろしい国であって，そこには一本の光線も届かず，死者の悲しい魂が愛と光と笑いが失われた世界の為に涙を流していた。
・portion は「部分」ですが，「分ける，分割する（portion out）」という意味があります。なおゲームの薬のポーションは r の無い potion です。
・strain は「（筋肉を）酷使する，緊張させる」で，ここでは「（目を）凝らす」ということでしょう。
・catch a glimpse of... は「……がちらりと見える，……を垣間見る」です。
・ハデス（プルートー）はポセイドン（ネプチューン）とゼウス（ユピテル）の兄です。確かゼウスは一番下なんですよね。
