Ranger’s blog yesterday (Jan.30th)

The park was calm and still chilly today.
In a desolate wintry scene, however, red blossoms were very conspicuous as if they talked about early spring. Those were Red Plum blossoms Prunus mume and Sasanqua Camellia Camellia sasanqua.  They are not only beautiful but also profitable for some bird species.  For Japanese White-eyes and Blown-eared Bulbuls the nectars of these flowers are their favourites.

A noteworthy feeding behavior was seen in the west side of the park, at the garden space.
The photos below are the feeding shots of a Japanese Tit and a Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker.  Both of them fed eggs in oothecae of Giant Asian Mantis Hierodula patellifera.

Eggs in oothcae of mantises have high nutritive value for insectivorous wintering birds in the park.

Grass bushes and shrubs in the west side of the park, where mantises lay eggs, were however reduced dramatically in the garden area because of over management and bush clearances. This may cause to increase feeding pressure on eggs and cause to decrease population sizes of the mantis species in the area.

The following is the list of species that park rangers observed today.

Mallard、Northern Pintail、Common Pochard、Tufted Duck、Little Grebe、Great Cormorant、Grey Heron、Eurasian Coot、Snipe、Common Sandpiper、Black  Kite、Eurasian Sparrowhawk、Northern Goshawk、Common Buzzard、Oriental Turtle Dove、Common Kingfisher、Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker、Bull-headed Shrike、Large-billed Crow、Japanese Tit、Brown-eared Bulbul、Japanese Bush Warbler、Japanese White-eye、White-cheeked Starling、Pale Thrush、Brown-headed Thrush、Dusky Thrush、Daurian Redstart、Eurasian Tree Sparrow、White Wagtail、Oriental Greenfinch、Hawfinch、Black-faced Bunting、Reed Bunting (34species)

The park is continuously under severe cold.  Nearly all streams and ponds in the park except “Shio-iri” Pond were frozen over.  They kept off waterfowls thus the park was slightly deserted today.

At East Freshwater Pond in the morning a Great Cormorant attempted to alight on the water. Just before landing the bird realized that the thick ice formed on the water. It turned immediately to climb steeply and flew away.

In another occasion a male Pochard was seen in the pond alone.  There were pieces of ice around the bird.  He could has been tried assault landing.

In the afternoon as the northwest seasonal wind began to blow, a considering number of Grey Herons concentrated on the east bank of “Shio-iri” Pond for avoiding the wind.

In the west side of the park at the vegetable garden a Rustic Banting was observed. The species is uncommon winter visitor in the park.

At this time of year visitors may encounter mixed-species flocks of different insectivorous species.  These flocks are particularly common in winter season. Japanese Tits and White-eyes are nuclear species in the park.  A Japanese Pygmy
Woodpecker often joins to flocks as a minority species.

Ranger’s blog yesterday (Jan. 24th)

A very interesting bird was observed at the small lawn square next to Nature Centre.

When a ranger and visitors were looking for the Long-tailed Rosefinch, a small bird flew in and alighted on a grass.  Since the people in the square haven’t expected such a small and inconspicuous bird it took time for them to identify the bird.
 1
It was a Fan-tailed Warbler.  The species was once dominant in the area in the early days of the park and the pre-park era. However, as time went on, the more the area occupied by thick forests and shrubs the less the species was common in the area.  Currently it is hard to see the species in the park.

Incidentally the Long-tailed Rosefinch was not seen in the park eventually, although many visitors aimed at this bird.

The following is the list of species that park rangers observed today.

A heavy snow hit Tokyo Metropolitanarea yesterday, and the park as well.
Blessed with good weather, the park was changed into brighten silver white land this morning.

Unfortunately (?), due to the warm weather brought by intense sunshine and south wind accumulated snow already began to thaw in the early morning.

Besides of snow, a pretty red winter bird lured the park visitors. There was a Long-tailed Rosefinch in a thicket nearNature Centre.

Because of its reddish plumage the bird is slightly vague in wintry desolated thickets. Its characteristic call “Pich-Poch” might be a better indicator than sight to look for the bird.

Remarkable birds and the event “Beginner’s birdwatching: Look for migratory birds”

A Water Pipit, relatively uncommon winter visitor in the park, moved along the wall at East Observation Blind.  At the blind the park visitors tend to look over a distance.  As far as today, beneath of a window was the notable spot.  “Toudai moto kurashi” (The lighthouse does not shine on its base).

In East Freshwater Pond a Little Grebe caught a huge crayfish. It was not obvious whether the bird swallowed it or not.

“Beginner’s Bird Watching”
Today we had 3 English speakers join our event at the park which lasted from 13:30 – 14:30. Our guests came to Japan from the Netherlands and Russia. They enjoyed the staff’s talk and learning bird names in both Japanese and English.

There were 37 participants (Japanese and English speakers). So the group was divided into 2 group lead by 2 rangers and they visited the East Observation Blind, and Nature Centre as part of the tour.  A total of 37 bird species was observed through the tour.

The next “Beginner’s Bird Watching” will be taken place on 4th February, Sunday.

Those were egg masses of the “Kunugi Kamemushi” Urostylis westwwdi, a kind of oak bug or stink bug and swarms of nymphs of the “Yokozuna Kamemushi” Agriosphodrus dohrni, a kind of assassin bug.

The White Wagtail, that attracts visitors with its characteristic tail pumping behaviour, is one of the common species in the park.  They prefer open space for feeding insects and do not beware human too much.
 1
(A mail White Wagtail)

The bird is also popular among the park rangers as well as visitors.

One of the most important works of the rangers is ploughing work with a tractor for habitat management.  Some certain areas in the eastern part of the park are designed for marsh lands and to maintain the marsh the park rangers manage to plough the lands several times through a year.  During a ploughing work White Wagtails used to come around very close to the tractor and absorbedly feed insects which were exposed from the soil by ploughing, with the tail wagging and without attention to the ranger.
 2
(A young White Wagtail)

If you would like to watch this pretty but a bit bold bird carefully and closely, the small lawn square next to Nature Centre might be one of the best spots to do it.
