【A bird of prey in the forest?】

A bird of prey on a tree in the thick forest, that fringes west bank of East Freshwater Pond, attracted ranger’s attention in Nature Center.   The bird was so far and hardly identified from Nature Center.  Through a telescope an Osprey was identified eventually but it seemed to be unsuitable for thick forest.

In “Shio-iri” Pond ducks were continuously very active for feedings.
Wigeons prefer water weeds that float on the surface of the water, thus there is a conflict with coots that have similar feed habit.
The photo below shows a Coot who hold a water weed in bill was chased by a Wigeon and a Coot. The bird was finally snatched and lost the weed

In fact, the tongue was fresh-colored bill of a Coot behind the Wigeon.

It was a rainy day today. Despite of such an overcast day the park received uncommon guest and regular ducks were busy for feeding.

A Common Buzzard on a tree beyond East Freshwater Pond has been seen from East Observation Blind in a distant view.  Under a mizzle, the bird stayed on the tree for a while.

In “Shio-iri” Pond, at the water between Observation Hut 1 and Water Gate (North) roughly 30 Pochards and Tufted Ducks eagerly and repeatedly dived into water.  They seemed to feed Small Brown Mussels Xenostrobus secures  the most common mussel in the pond.

The park was under a regular rainfall again and the birds in the park seemed to be depressed.

A lonesome Long-billed Ringed Plover foraged on the island in “Shio-iri” Pond.

It was continuously raining today because of the 21st Typhoon of the year.

Birds of prey in the park looked dispirit.  An Osprey delighted and rested quietly on a pile among Great Cormorants in “Shio-iri” Pond.
Besides this, a lonely Common Buzzard perched on a willow tree near East Freshwater Pond, being looked out by a flock of noisy Azure-winged Magpies.

Observation Hut 3 faces on West Freshwater Pond was a bit crowded today with visitors.  Popular Mandarin Duck of three individuals were observed in the pond.  Unfortunately none of ranger could take photos of them and consequently we can only show photo of the pond instead of the birds.
