Today at the Bird Park the English speaking staff welcomed 15 guests (foreigners and Japanese mixed in) for a special event. Most of the visitors were first-timers who did not know anything about the park, so the special tour of the closed areas and the beach excursion were a great eye-opening experience! It is so interesting to see what Tokyo used to look like before the high-rises and sea walls were here. The habitats you see in the Bird Park are different from the mature forests you might find in areas like Meiji-Jingu. Plant biologists have stated that the forests on the West side of Meiji-Jingu, over 100 years old is very similar to the vegetation found at the Bird Park. And the East side of the Bird Park, if it can remain wild and conserved, is a younger sibling (30 year old) version of that forest! The reclaimed land that the Bird Park sits on, allows biologists and nature lovers to see into a little window of what a young forests looks like and how they mature. After a short orientation and round of self-introductions, the group went to the East Freshwater Pond and could see the native species of the Spot Billed Ducks (Karugamo), baby Little Grebes and other water loving bird species. Then in the closed area, the tidal areas offered a wealth of isopods, invertebrates and crabs in the “splash zone” beach area. The kids could find some nice examples of fish hiding in the oysters like Mimizu-haze, Luciogobius guttatus a genus of fish in the goby family, Gobiidae and the spotted muzzle blenny, Omobranchus punctatus or Japanese name Idaken Ginpo. The blenny is famous for laying its eggs in an oyster and protecting the babies until they are born. IMG_2196
The sunny weather but cool breeze helped participants as they searched the forest floor for frogs and insects (other than mosquitoes). In the afternoon, everyone enjoyed a little lunch together and Chief Ranger Saigawa gave a powerpoint presentation about the history of the park and the complexities of management. At the end, the staff received good feedback from the participants and ended the program around 2PM.
