豊富な実例を元に、重要な情報提供と問題提起をしていますが、あまり読まれてはいないようです。
「節と句の書き換え問題」とか、「意味上の主語付動名詞句」とか、「同格のthat節」とかよりも、「気になる」語法を示していますので、未読の方はもちろん、既に一読した方も、読んで見て下さい。
上述の記事から抜粋で再録。
基本となる形は、次のように、先行文脈を受けるthis やthatに続いて譲歩となる内容を述べるものです。このような例は、学習用の英和辞典にも載っていません。実際基本的な使い方であるにも関わらずです。

の捉え方、使い方での留意点を解説したものです。
そこでの最重要項目を再録。
このThis despite ...の省略表現で気をつけるべきなのは、A. This despite B. という情報の流れで、Thisは先行文脈のAを受けるということだけに囚われて、
(X) それ (= A) にもかかわらず Bである。
という読みをしてしまうことです。
適切な処理は、
(○）そう(= A) であるのは、Ｂにもかかわらずなのです。
ですから、やはり、一度、基本形・原型ともいえる、"This is true [so] despite ...." を通過しておくのが吉。
ということで、despiteについて私が割いてきたエネルギーや時間に比して、in spite of の方は殆ど取り上げて来ませんでした。
これは、普段、私が見聞きする英語が「ニュース」に偏っていることも大きいでしょうし、入試問題の分析や解法にそれほど興味関心がないことも影響しているでしょう。
私にとっての重要度は、相変わらず

なんですが、「日本のテストや教材って、in spite of を過剰に取り上げていないか？」という印象があるので、この機会に少し整理しておきたいと思います。
大学入試が気になる高校段階の英語指導者や、塾、予備校の先生は多いとは思うのですが、比較的近年の入試での出題事例を見ても、
5万数千問の出題のうち、
despite は3000題強で出現。
長文では約1000回出現。
英作文では約180回、会話では約120回。
一方の in spite of は1200題弱で出現。
長文では約400回、英作文では50弱、会話では40強くらいの出現回数です。
大学入試センターの作成する試験だけを取り上げると、
センター試験までの2000強の大問の中で、
despiteは19問で出現。本試験では2016年が最後、追試験では2019年が最後の出現でした。
in spite of は17問で出現。2012年が最後の出題。
共通テストでは、
despiteが3例、in spite of が1例です。
＜前置詞＋the fact that＞が接続詞的に用いられる場合の使用頻度は、上述の過去ログでも示しましたが、Garner (2022) では

です。
COCA系から、話し言葉も拾えるものとして、COCAとTVコーパスの結果を。
まずはCOCAをベンチマークに。
despite the fact。同格のthatの省略も結構多いです。
in spite of。こちらではthatの省略は少ない。
COCAで見る限りでは、全体では一桁違うくらいで、Spokenで５：１という感じです。

Softmatchaで「単独の出現回数」を見てみると、
despiteは 16,435,666 hits。
in spite of は1,896,845 hitsで一桁違います。
Columbia Guide (1993年)では、p.250で、
Those who insist that brevity and conciseness are the highest virtues urge the use of despite or although in place of in spite of. All three locutions are useful and Standard, and each has its place, depending on context and style.
のように説いているのですが、その “context” や “style” について詳しくは教えてくれないのですね。
最近の Collins COBUILD English Usage (2019年)でも、この二つの表現は「同じ」という説明しかなされません。同書からの用例を見比べて、contextやstyleが分かるでしょうか？

LongmanのActivator (2nd) は2002年の刊行ですから、既に四半世紀が経とうとしている「古い」辞書で、その依拠しているコーパスも古いものですが、こんな記述です。「文脈や文体」は見えるでしょうか？

同じLongmanのLDOCE (6th)は、2014年ですが、そこでは in spite of oneselfも成句で取り上げていますので、despiteとの差は見いだせません。

- fact, lack, presence, effortsなどの前に用いられる
とありますが、こうして実態を見ると、factが段違い、別格なのは明白。
高頻度の名詞としては
- lack / presence / evidence / absence / loss
などの「（不） 存在； 顕在」
- efforts / challenges / difficulties / problems / pain / risks
などの「努力； 労苦」
などの他、
- differences
も despiteともin spite of とも共起していることが窺えますから、文脈や文体の差を見いだすのは難しいです。

古い本ですが、上本佐一 『英語同意語小辞典』（研究社、1970年）でも、小西友七 『英語シノニムの語法』（研究社、1976年）でも、意味の強さで
- in spite of ＞ despite
という記述があり、「文語」「古風」という注記をつけています。
この1970年代頃の語法研究者の依拠している書籍や媒体は、1960年代〜1970年代半ば、と考えられますから、先ほどのCOHAの表にあるように、 in spite of の方が優勢で、「勢いがある」ように思えても不思議ではありません。
米国の辞書Random House Dictionary は初版が1966年、改訂版が1986年ですが、小学館版の『Random House英和大辞典（第2版）』（1994年）には、次のような類語の解説があります。
despite 現在では文語的でいくぶん古風であるが，積極的妨害があることを示す
- Despite procrastination and disorganization, they finished the project.
- 遅延と混乱という事情を排して，彼らはその計画を完了した.
in spite of 現代では despite と同じ意味のくだけた表現で，これも考慮しなければならない強い反対勢力または状況があることを示す
- He succeeded in spite of many discouragements.
- 多くの妨害にもかかわらず，やり遂げた.
ここで「現在」と言われているのは、当時の最新であっても1980年代、ということを確認しておきます。
この「despite は古風な表現」という注記は、上述の現代英語のコーパスの検索結果とは相容れないように思えます。
