フィギュアスケートの四大陸選手権が終わりました。
女子シングルの私の推し、青木祐奈選手がSP2位からの逆転優勝。
初出場初優勝です。
来月の五輪に出場する選手たちをことごとく抑えての勝利ですから称賛に値するものですが、それ以上に、ショートとフリーと二本の素晴らしいプログラムを滑り切って、大幅に自己ベストを更新したことを言祝ぎます。
来月からはヨーロッパでArt On Ice公演。
帰国しての3月は福岡で滑走屋の公演が決まっているようです。
多くの人に見て、愛でてもらいたい、青木さんの滑りです。
さて、そんなおめでたい話題とは裏腹な内容の「今日の気になる語法」は、米国の、看過できない、こちらの事件に関わる記事で使われていた、あの語。

そう、「あの語」とは、
- sustainable
です。
SDGs絡みで、イマドキの小学生でも知っているだろう語ですが、今回の文脈・生息域での “sustainable” は、自動翻訳では適切に扱ってくれません。
誤解を増すといけないので、この段階ではまだ和訳は載せません。
少し前の記事ですが類例追加。

こちらも先ほどの例と同様、自動翻訳では上手くいきません。
先ほどの例も含めてSDGsの文脈で語られる「環境への配慮」という観点での「持続可能」ではなく、「今の過酷な状況下で、無理な方針を、このまま続けることは物理的・精神的・制度的・倫理的に不可能だ」という、「限界」を近くに感じている悲鳴や、「破綻」が迫っている危機感の表明で使われているのがこの "sustainable" です。
前者のミネアポリスの記事では、
過剰で過酷とも言えるICEの大量投入による「治安維持（名目の）活動」の果てに発生した銃撃殺人事件に対しての市民の抗議活動の拡がりを受けて、
- 「ミネアポリスでは、この状況はもう限界だ」
- 「もう持ちこたえられない； 現場がもたない」
- 「放置しておける状態ではない」
という意味合いで
- not sustainable
と言っています。
また、メリーランドの州知事のコメントでは、
州兵の配備や連邦捜査官を街のパトロールに投入し続ける方針に対して
- 「（体制・運用として）維持できない」
- 「無理がある」
- 「このままではダメだ」
という意味合いで
- not sustainable
が使われています。
両方に共通しているのは、
- 「現在と同じ条件・状況で、これからも継続して対応する、対応を維持することが可能であるとOKサインを出すこと」を否定しているというところです。
いわば、
- 「現在の対応や状況には明らかに無理があり、遠くないうちに破綻するのでダメ出しして批判・批難・糾弾する」
という切迫したニュアンスを含んでいるわけです。
比喩は新たな誤解を生む可能性もありますが、喩えて言うなら
- a bubble waiting to burst
という状況ですかね。
同じ生息域に当てはまる英語表現としては
- That's not viable. / That's unbearable.
- That's enough./ Enough is enough.
などいくつも思いつくでしょうが、“sustainable” のパラフレーズとして整合するには、やはり元になる動詞 “sustain” の語義を押さえることが必要だと思います。

上述の "Face the nation" はCBSの番組でしたが、CBSのサイトで公開されている記事では、次のような見出しがついています。
"have had enough" の主語は peopleでミネアポリス市民ですね。

個人的に私がこの用法を見聞きして捉えた語義は
not sustainable
≒ irrational / unreasonable / unacceptable
というものでした。
MW’sのWeb版一般用では、
sustainableの類語として、
- justifiable
のみをあげています。
面白いのが、この裏返しで、 “justifiable” から類語を求めてみると、
と多様な形容詞が並ぶのですが、この一群にsustainableは見つからないということ。
NOADでは、語義の２で
- Able to be upheld or defended: sustainable definitions of good educational practice.
という語義を立てています。
動詞sustainのどの語義が、当該のsustainableに顕われているのか？
ODEとMW’sの一般用をみてみます。
SDGs絡みではない、ODEでいえば語義の4、MW’sでいえば語義の7のような生息域の延長線にいるのが今回取り上げている sustainableが棲んでいるといえるでしょう。
当然否定の文脈で一語で言うならば
- unsustainable
になります。

ここでの適切な語義は、
- 支持・擁護できない
- 正当化できない
とでもなるでしょう。
百歩譲って「持続可能性」の語義を活かすとしても
- ICE（移民関税執行局）の活動が「信頼を損ねている」と指摘し、その活動は今後続けさせられないと表明した。
とでもしないと文脈に合わないのではないかと。
いつもいつも、同じ話しで申し訳ないですが、語彙学習・語彙指導の肝は、単語テストなんかじゃなくて
- 語義と生息域の実感
だと思います。

ここでのunsustainableは「持続可能」ではなく、「支持できない；擁護できない」でuntenableやindefensibleの意味。写真内の文章にある “refuse to tolerate” を踏まえれば、”intolerable” で「堪えられない」。 さらには「容認不能・不可」でunacceptable
や「正当化できない」で unjustifiableに近い意味合いだと思われます。

この文脈での最後の一文を言い換えるなら
- This can't possibly be okay.
- This should never have happened.
などの候補が浮かぶでしょう。
単に「持続可能」という意味でsustainableを使っているのではないことは明らかです。
