欧州でも反トランプの波が高まっている様子はひしひしと感じられます。
次のツイートで引かれているのは欧州議会議長のRoberta Metsola氏。

The measures threatened over the weekend by the United States administration will not help improve security in the Arctic. In fact, they risk the opposite.

risk the opposite (effect) 「逆の事態・現象が生じる恐れがある；逆効果となる可能性がある」
最近見聞きする機会が増えた印象。

今日の気になる語法は、このrisk界隈。
例によって、英語表現そのものを取り上げてツイートしても反応は薄いのです。
あるがままの英語こそが生きた教材なのにね。

今朝の私のぼやきがこちら。

高校生に限らず、他動詞としてのriskの語義と生息域の実感が薄いのは、訳語の
「危険を冒す」
を先に覚えたものが強く影響しているのでしょうか？

コウビルド英英和はいい仕事をしたと思う。
「〜という結果になる可能性がある」という訳語にまとめたのは秀逸。
OALDは「危険に晒す；危険を冒す」の重力から解き放たれるまで、用例の補充、差し替えなどもう一頑張りが必要。

英和は「訳語」が鬼門。
ウィズダムとO-LEXは訳語は良いけれど用例に生息域が明確なものを入れて欲しかった…
G6はパラフレーズの工夫は良いのだけれど、肝腎の用例が…

上述のコウビルドの語義「〜という結果になる可能性がある」に準じた他動詞の用例を見ていきます。

• If executives fail to exploit the opportunities of networking they risk being left behind.
幹部社員がネットワーキングの機会を利用しそこなったら、取り残される危険がある。
• If he presents himself as a radical he risks scaring off the moderates whose votes he so desperately needs.
急進的なイメージを与えてしまうと、彼には是非とも必要な穏健派の票を逃してしまう危険がある。

ここまでの例は、どれも動詞riskが他動詞で使われているものですが、

  • a. 既に存在する、または想定している目的語となる人・もの・ことの「存在や成立」を危うくする、「状態や価値を傷つける／損なう」危険に晒す行動を主語がとる

のではなく

  • b. 主語の存在や行為が、目的語に来ている、本来は歓迎したくない、被害、損失など、マイナス評価される事態や出来事を引き起こす可能性がある

ことを表しています。

今回懸案の語義である、上記のb.に当たるものが、次のどちらに当てはまるか？
Shorter Oxfordの定義は簡明なだけに、吟味は面倒。強いていえば、2.の後半の語義「ものやことの可能性を受け入れる」が近いでしょうか。

同じOxford系でもNOADでは語義区分が少々異なり、当該の語義は、次のうちの2番目（・の最初）の「（不快または望ましくない出来事）を引き起こす可能性を生じさせるような行動をとる、または行動をとらないこと」方でしょうか。

verb [with object] expose (someone or something valued) to danger, harm, or loss: he risked his life to save his dog.
• act or fail to act in such a way as to bring about the possibility of (an unpleasant or unwelcome event): unless you're dealing with pure alcohol you're risking contamination from benzene.
• incur the chance of unfortunate consequences by engaging in (an action): he was far too intelligent to risk attempting to deceive her.

比較的良く出てきている語法書の COBUILD English Usage (4th edition, 2019年)でも、動詞のriskに関しては、注記があまり役に立っていない印象です。

risk

If something risks doing something, it may happen as a result of something else they do.

  • He risks breaking his leg when he jumped.

You can also say that someone risks doing something when they do it even though they know it might have unpleasant consequences.

  • If you have an expensive rug, don’t risk washing it yourself.

DeepLの和訳を載せておきます。隔靴掻痒の域を出ませんね。

リスク
動詞として使用される場合
何かが何かをするリスクがあるとは、その行為の結果として何かが起こり得ることを意味する。

  • 彼はジャンプした際に足を骨折するリスクがあった。

また、不快な結果を招く可能性を承知しながらもその行為を行う場合にも「リスクを冒す」と表現できる。

  • 高価な絨毯をお持ちなら、自分で洗うリスクは冒さないでください。

やはり、現行版のCOBUILDの定義が最も実用的ではないかと思います。

例によって、大学入試の読解素材文から見繕っておきます。

The reasons for our prolific understating are not hard to discover: our strict prohibitions on earnestness, gushing, and boasting require almost constant use of understatement. ここでは risk exhibiting Aは、 「（披露することが憚られる）Aを披露する可能性が生じる」という意味のつながりであることを確認。実際には、却下系のrather than に続いているので、その行為・現象の選択はないことも確認。

入試読解素材文から2例追加。

このような動詞riskの語義は、名詞としてのriskの語義を丁寧に扱えば、それほど不思議なものではありません。
G6の記述でのパラフレーズを思い出して下さい。

I risked their complaining. ＝I risked the possibility that they would complain.
私は彼らが不平を言うかもしれないのを覚悟の上でやった.

ここでのriskは可能性を損なうのではなく、ネガティブな事態を生じる可能性があるのを分かっていてある行為を行う、という文脈で使われています。

名詞としてのrisk　の典型例の一つは、

  • the risk of infection 感染の危険性

というようなものです。ここでは、infection「感染」は望ましいものではないので、「危険性」という日本語が対応していますが、「可能性」には肯定的（積極的）な査定も否定的（消極的）な査定もあります。
以下、COBUILD米語英英和の定義と用例。

If there is a risk of something unpleasant, there is a possibility that it will happen.
• There is a small risk of brain damage from the procedure.
治療処置により脳損傷を起こす危険性が少しある。

定義で使われているpossibilityは、あくまでも「可能性」であって、その可能性の中身が「ネガティブ」な場合に、riskという語が選ばれる、と考えるのが良いでしょうし、そこまでの把握ができていれば、「リスクがある」という訳語でも十分に英語の意味は表せると思います。

教材も、テストも、「危険を冒す」という訳語から、そろそろ卒業する時期に来ているのでは？

を捉え直す上でも有効だと思います。

ただし、現代英語の使用頻度としては
run the risk of … ＞ take the risk of …
で相当に差があることは知っておいて良いでしょう。指導者に限らず、学習者、受験生であっても、です。

一応意味の違いを示してはいます。

英和のイディオム辞典は新しいものが（少）ない現状なんですが、その中では最新の部類に入る安藤本では、上記二つの成句を一緒くたにしていますね。
以下、『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂、2023年）より。

この用例のrunとtakeを入れ替えられるのか、はちょっと疑問ですね。

困ったときのマケーレブ本は？

でも、まあ、マケーレブ本は古いっちゃぁ、古いですからね。


今日取り上げた “risk the opposite (effect)” という表現も、

  • 逆効果になりかねない

という意味を杓子定規に言って、

  • run the risk of having [doing] the opposite effect

としてはいけないわけではありません。
実際に、そういう例はありますから。

少数ではあれ、このような使用例を、その生息域の中で眺めれば、　人主語で見られるような「敢えて危険を冒して逆張りする」「逆効果になる危険を冒してまで…する」という意味ではなく、ことがら主語で「も」使われる、「逆効果となる可能性がある」という「評価・批評」の文脈での意味を感じられるのではないかと思います。

成句としての定着具合は今後とも要観察ですが、その大元となる他動詞のriskの語義として、take the risk (of ...) と重ならない意味をしっかり拾うことが重要では？
