某局の大滝詠一氏の特集。
『幸せな結末』が最大のヒット、という「事実」に驚いた。
自分にとっての衝撃はサイダーでも、夢で…でも、…くじらでもなく

1981年。私は17歳でした。
高3の体育祭のダンスの曲で、10ブロック中2ブロックが、『ロンバケ』から選んでいたくらいにはナイアガラサウンドは浸透していたと思います。
その後、大学に進んだら、同好の士がわんさかいて、
- おお、これでいいんだ。
と安心したことを覚えています。
当時は､松本隆氏がこの詞に込めた思いなど知る由もありませんでしたが、歌を楽しむのは聴き手の自由ですから。
『幸せな結末』の仮歌というか、初期の歌詞バージョンとの差にも驚きましたが、あらためて感じたのは、大瀧さんはヴォーカルのプロデュースに誰よりも拘っていただけでなく、自らも優れた歌い手だったなぁということ。
ちょうど、オーディオテクニカのヘッドフォンのコードの交換品が届いたところだったので、高音質で再生してみました。結末や如何に？
さて、
前回の記事では、前置詞、接続詞として､主として「選択却下」の文脈で使われる
- rather than
の幅広い実例を見てみました。
タイトルは、更新曲の歌詞から拾っています。
自分で書いていて、教材は勿論、辞書や語法書の記述も､実例と丁寧にすり合わせて､自分自身の理解や知識を整理することが大切な項目だとあらためて感じた次第。
特に、「節」が配置される使われ方は､多種多様な動詞の目的語になる名詞節のSVに相当することがあるので、一つ一つその生息域で確かめることが求められます。
次のような rather than の例は一筋縄ではいかない、話者の心理と表現形式の選択を表していると思います。
Catholic moral theory, based on Natural Law, holds that it is never morally acceptable to kill an innocent person in order to help another. So if Chiara had undergone life-saving treatment and Francesco had unintentionally died in the womb, Chiara would not have been morally culpable. 他動詞のpreferが「選択」の典型例ですが、所謂「仮定法過去完了」で、would have preferredとなっています。その動詞に続くthat SVの内容の選択と却下で、A rather than B のAのSV部分は、過去から見た未来とでもいうべき形合わせで her baby die とVは原形になっていて、BのSV部分は she did herselfとなっていることを確認。
今日の「気になる語法」は、前回の記事の冒頭で言及していた､もう一つの表現

です。
SwanのPEUでは次のように解説されています。

Instead is not used alone as a preposition; we use the two words instead of.
- I’ll have tea instead of coffee, please. (not … instead coffee …)
- Can you work with Sophie instead of me today, please?
Instead of is not usually followed by an infinitive.
- I stayed in bed all day instead of going to work. (not … instead of (to) go to work.)
2 instead of and without
Instead of suggests that one person, thing or action replaces another. Without suggests that one person, thing, etc is not together with another. Compare:
- Ruth was invited to the reception, but she was ill, so Lou went instead of her. (Lou replaced Ruth.) (not … Lou went without her.)
Max and Jake were invited, but Max was ill, so Jake went without him. (Normally they would have gone together.)
- She often goes swimming instead of going to school. (Swimming replaces school.) (not She often goes swimming without going to school.)
She often goes swimming without telling her mother. (Swimming and telling her mother should go together.) (not She often goes swimming instead of telling her mother.)

When we put a verb after a preposition, we normally use an -ing form (gerund), not an infinitive.
- I like to cycle to work instead of driving. (not … instead to drive …)
このように、PEUでは、instead of に不定詞のto原形は続かない、と書かれているのですが、1990年の辞書『ロイヤル英和』（旺文社）に既に､次の記述があります。

小規模なコーパスしか作れない時代のエポックな辞書である『ロイヤル』で、「…多く見られる」と書いてあるところが気になりますね。
私もお手伝いした『クラウン受験英語辞典』（三省堂、2000年）は、受験英語の記録として､資料的価値は高いと思っていますが、こんな注記があります。

日本の旧来型の英作文の教材でも、次のような助言を与えてくれていれば、良心的だと思います。高校生レベルで多く見られる誤りは、instead of [rather than] しか使えない状況で withoutを使ってしまうことと、付帯状況ではないのに without を使ってしまうところである。以下の例を参照。
「財布を持たずに外出してしまった」
I went out without (bringing) my wallet. であれば、単純にwithout でいいが
「窓を閉めないで外出してしまった」
(x) I went out instead of closing the windows. では選択肢が相反するものではないので誤り。
(?) I went out without closing the windows. では行動の前後関係があるので不自然。
(○) I forgot to close the windows when I went out.

2022年の辞書で「不定詞（句）を用いるのは非標準」という注記です。
学習用ではなく、一般用ですが、『ランダムハウス英和』(小学館、1986年)では次のような記述でした。

…の［する］代わりに，…でなく，…しないで，…どころではなく.
of の後は名詞だけでなく，形容詞，動名詞，不定詞，as 節なども可能
Instead of stopping, the rain increased.

最後の例では、respectとhateが使役動詞 makeの動詞型で、目的格補語の原形（不定詞）であることを確認。
LA Timesのアーカイブにある1989年の記事から。

What we sacrifice by trying to do everything is full involvement in any one thing.”

この例も1989年ですから35年前以上も前のものです。
では、30年以上の時がたって、不定詞が続く語法は廃用となったのでしょうか？
比較的新しい英語ニュースから実例を引きます。

“instead of to be in service” の部分で不定詞が使われています。興味深いのは、冒頭で “Rather than + -ing形” を使っている同じ話者（記者）が、instead of の後で to 原形を使っているところです。
アカデミックな文脈でも使用例はあります。

同じ記事の続きでもう一つの使用例があります。

ここでは、望ましい､選択すべき「ことがら」の列挙で使われている不定詞句に続いて、却下されるべき不定詞句で “to be engaged in ‘witch-hunt’” が示されていて、専門分野ではない私が読んでいても違和感はありません。
使用頻度には大きな差がありますが、「ことがら」での不定詞での「名詞化」、目的の不定詞での「副詞化」では、to原形が現れることがありますから、そのto原形の形が現れることだけを取り上げて「低頻度」＝「廃用」と言うのは不適切だし、『ジーニアス』のように、「非標準」という場合も、S+VのSが共通していて、Vの動詞相当での形合わせの話し、と理解するのが適切、というのが私の実感です。
