insteadやrather thanなど、一方を却下する言い方を学び、文章の中で実際に触れることで、筆者の焦点の明確な理解が出来るようになった。

という生徒からのコメントがあるのですが、私は教壇に立った1986年から一貫して、「軌道修正」や「選択と却下」の談話辞は丁寧に扱ってきました。

選択と却下の談話辞での代表選手といえば

  • rather than

でしょう。
上述のnoteの記事でも、

19. We want to make handicapped people productive for society rather than being a burden. 「ハンディキャップのある人を、負担ではなく社会のために生産的にしたい。」

「選択」側は、to make ... people productive と不定詞から使役動詞 make の目的格補語で形容詞の productive なのに対して、「却下」側は being a burden とbe 動詞の動名詞化。

という実例を取り上げ､語法注記を加えていましたが、なかなかどうして、rather than もinstead of も一筋縄ではいかないので､この機会に rather than に関して、「表現」の観点で「語法」を整理しておきたいと思います。（このファイル自体も、もう4年経ちますので、そろそろ改訂作業に入ろうと思います。）

  • A rather than B

という環境で、AとBはそれぞれ､同じレベルの語、または語句が配置される、という点で「前置詞」でもあり、「接続詞」でもあるという特徴がありますが、悩ましいのは「動詞の成分」が配置される場合のrather than の右側の形合わせで、時制を持たせるのか、原形か -ing 形かという部分。
本当に to + 原形が来ることはないのか？「節」が来る､という場合にAにもBにもSVが来るのか？など、実例と自分の理解・知識・見覚え・聞き覚えとのすりあわせを丁寧に行う必要があります。

最近のニュース英語から実例を。
rather thanに原形が続く例。

More Israeli reservists are risking jail time rather than serve in Gaza again. It is understandable that some people are reluctant to take part in a genocide.

より多くのイスラエル予備兵が、ガザでの再従軍よりも禁固刑を選択するリスクを負っています。ジェノサイドに加担することに消極的な人々がいることは理解できます。

rather thanに -ing形が続く例。

This is important. Look how Western media frames the story as if Israel is helping—rather than STARVING—Gaza.
When Palestinians die of starvation, Israel is erased from headlines. When even a little aid supposedly trickles in, Israel is named as the provider. This is by design.


これは重要な点です。西側メディアが、イスラエルがガザを「支援している」かのように報じる一方で、実際には「飢えさせている」という現実を見てください。
パレスチナ人が餓死すると、イスラエルの名は見出しから消えます。一方で、わずかな支援が入ったとされる時には、イスラエルが提供者として名指しされます。これは意図的なものです。

rather than 前置のイントロで、-ing形が続く例。

この数例で、

  • 自分で書く（言う）段になれば「一筋縄ではいかない感がある

ということが少しは分かっていただけたでしょうか？

一般には、語法に関しては語法書が頼りになると思われているかも知れません。

米語法に詳しく、一時期は某Ｇ英和の編集者も参照していたというColumbia Guide (1993年)を見てみると、p.360 で、

rather than is a compound function word that serves as either preposition or coordinating conjunction, as in

  • Rather than run for office this year, I’ve decided to wait

and

  • She decided to laugh and play rather than sit and mope.

In the construction

  • I am more interested in seeing her sister rather than in talking to Mary,

the rather is unnecessary and unidiomatic: omit it.

と解説し、用例を示しています。ただし、語法書とは言え、使い方に関する補助線たる解説､注記がないので、前置、後置での形合わせに自信が持てるか、微妙なところです。

日本の学校英語の批判でよく耳にするのは、「英語ネイティブは､英語をこう使う､ドヤっ！」という煽りのような指摘ですが、英語ネイティブ用の英英辞典の記述や解説で､動詞表現の形合わせがよく分かるものなのか、見てみましょう。

まずは一般用の英英辞典。
Shorter Oxfordは次のような語義と用例。動詞表現は一例しかないのでよくわかりません。

6 More correctly; more correctly speaking; on the contrary, instead. (Foll. by than.) LME.
Goldsmith Say rather, that he loves all the world.
Scott Fitzgerald They talked shop…or rather she listened while he talked shop.
I. Murdoch Feeling rather than seeing…the iron bedsteads.
Scotsman Designing cities for vehicles…rather than for people.

NOADは現代の米語法を反映しているはずなのですが、rather thanとしての語義､用例を見ても、動詞表現の使い方は分かりません。特段の注記もなし。

Used to precede an idea that is different or opposite to a previous statement: There is no shortage of basic skills in the workplace. Rather, the problem is poor management.
• more precisely (used to modify or clarify something previously stated): I walked, or rather limped, the two miles home.
• instead of; as opposed to: she seemed indifferent rather than angry.

学習用の英英辞書に目を移すと、Chambers Essential (1998年)では、b の語義項目で、文頭に Rather than Bがくる例を２文載せていますが、一つは原形で一つは -ing 形となっています。使い分けなどの注記はありません。

1 a One thing is the case rather than another if the first is so and not the second:

  • It's an encyclopedia rather than a dictionary.
  • This is a cause for alarm rather than celebration.

b You choose one thing, or choose to do one thing, rather than another, if you choose the first in preference to the second:

  • For the walls, we chose yellow rather than blue, which would have made the room too dark.
  • Rather than risk offending him, I accepted the invitation reluctantly.
  • Rather than checking the whole population, we should concentrate on the high-risk groups.

今はなきマクミランのMED (2002年)では、次の定義と用例。

rather than
used for saying that one thing is preferred to another or happens instead of another:

  • Doug chose to quit rather than admit that he’d made a mistake.
  • Rather than criticizing your husband, why not find out if there’s something wrong?

二例目の主節（主文）の why not 原形 ? のように省略がデフォルトの表現が来ると、「 A rather than B」では「同じレベルの語句が配置される」という説明では不十分だということが分かるのではないでしょうか？

比較的新しいMW’s の学習者用の上級版 (2017年) を見てみましょう。

この語義用法での前置のrather than に続くのは -ing形です。

2 used to say what is not chosen or done because something else is chosen or done instead

もう十年以上改訂版の出ていないLDOCEですが、Longmanのコーパスから､動詞表現が続く実例を見ておきましょう。

独自コーパスで最新の使用例を反映していることが多いCambridgeでは、

rather than

とバラエティ豊かな用例を配しています。ここではrather thanに続く動詞表現は、原形か -ing形。前置は一例のみで -ing形です。

「論より証拠」などとも言いますが、ここまでの実例から､はっきりとした使い分けの原理原則を見いだすのは大変だろうなぁという印象です。

大規模コーパスに基づいた語法書であるCollins COBUILD English Usage (第4版； 2019年)では、あっさりした書きぶりです。

Rather than is used to link words or expressions of the same type. You use rather than when you have said what is true and you want to compare it with what is not true.

  • I have used familiar English names rather than scientific Latin ones.
  • It made him frightened rather than angry.

平明で簡潔なのはいいのですが、この解説と用例だけでは、動詞表現での形合わせの原理原則を見いだすのは難しいでしょう。

語法に詳しいという定評がある、学習用の英和辞典の記述を見てみましょう。
Wisdom英和から。「節」の配置も可能としていることに注意。

1[A rather than B/rather A than B]BよりもむしろA, BというよりはA(!A, Bは文法上同等な名形副動や句, 節

節の配置は次の2例目。どちらもSVが揃っていて、Vの時制はどちらも過去形となっています。

I decided to take a walk rather than (to) go [going] straight home.
私は家へまっすぐ帰るより, いっそ散歩しようと決めた.
Philosophy chose me, rather than I chose philosophy.
私が哲学を選んだというより, むしろ哲学が私を選んだのだ.

(2)to不定詞 主節にto不定詞が含まれる場合, rather thanの後はto不定詞またはdoingの形が可能だが, to不定詞のときはtoはしばしば省略される.

語法
⑴ rather thanの後に動詞がくる場合, 動詞の形は主節に合わせるのが基本：I prefer making things rather than buying the finished products. 完成品を買うよりも自分で作る方が好きだ. ただし, 主節にto不定詞がある場合は原形不定詞かdoingを使うのがふつう：I decided to e-mail rather than call ［calling］. 電話するよりもメールすることに決めた.
⑵ rather thanの前置は2a）の行為の選択を表す場合にのみ可能：Rather than calling ［call］, I decided to e-mail. 《◆前置される場合はrather thanの後にはdoingを用いる傾向がある》 （cf. ×Rather than snowed, it rained.）.

学習用ではなく、古い一般用の辞書になりますが『ランダムハウス英和』には次の記述があります。

この最後の注記は気になりますね。ここで定形動詞として示されているのは、過去形の "danced" です。

日本でも広く読まれているであろう、Swan の語法書 (PEU 第4版；2016年)は、辞書以上に実例を多く載せている印象です。

This expression is normally used in ‘parallel’ structures: for example with two adjectives, adverbs, nouns, infinitives or -ing forms.

  • I’d call her hair chestnut rather than brown.
  • I’d prefer to go in August rather than in July.
  • We ought to invest in machinery rather than buildings.
  • I prefer starting early rather than leaving things to the last minute.

When the main clause has a to-infinitive, rather than is usually followed by an infinitive without to or by an -ing form.

  • I decided to write rather than phone/phoning.
  • Rather than use/using the car, I decided to go by bike.

Swanでは、後半に動詞成分の選択却下の例が配されていますが、「主節に不定詞を含む場合は、rather thanに続くのは通例、toのない不定詞か -ing 形」という注記があります。
ここでの2例はどちらも主節が ＜decided to 原形＞で行為の選択決定に関わる動詞表現であることを確認。同書では、別の項目で、文頭の rather thanの例を載せていますが、そこでは原形を示しています。

の部分で rather than に続く内容は SVとなっているのですが、これはSVの内容を、認識する「ことがら」の名詞節と見做して、その適否､優劣を判断していると考えるといいでしょう。

類例追加。

Ronchi said: “We do a lot of ROA reviews at Fourth Line and in some, we do pick up that the clients’ circumstances have changed significantly and they should have a statement of advice instead. We find it’s usually that the adviser didn’t necessarily view it as a significant change or pick it up. It is usually that they weren’t aware of it rather than they are deliberately avoiding it.

A rather than Bであれ、Rather than B, A であれ、「Bを却下してAを選択する」、「B ではなくて、Aが生じる」という表現形式である以上、コーパス検索でのヒット数が少数であれ、そこには、その表現形式を選択をした書き手（話し手）が存在している、ということを忘れてはならないでしょう。
