8月も下旬、カレンダーで残りの枠は今日を入れて6日。今月も生き延びられそうで何より。

今日の「気になる語法」はその「窓；窓枠」の意味で用いられる名詞の

  • window

の生息域です。

『ランダムハウス英和』（小学館、1986年）に既にこの記述があります。

8.（事をなすのに都合のよい）時間（帯），期間，好機，時機，潮時
Investors have a window of perhaps six months before interest rates rise.
おそらくあと6か月は利率が上がらないだろうから，投資家にとってはそれまではチャンスだ.

比較的新しい実例を見ていきましょう。

There is an international window between March 31 and April 8, and Football Australia has scheduled announcements for Wednesday in Sydney and Newcastle which are expected to confirm the Matildas will be playing friendlies in those cities.

ランダムハウス英和より新しいCOBUILDの初版 (1987年) にはこの語義区分はないのですが、第4版 (2001年)では次のようになっていて､現行の第10版（2022年）も同じです。

「他の活動の間の短い時間・期間」とちゃんと書いてありますね。

となっていて、定義文のunusualにちょっと「むむっ」としますね。

今では絶版のWBD では

とあり、1980年代の辞書ではあるものの、その定義文の明快さには流石といわざるを得ません。

Penguinの辞書だと次のような定義と用例。定義の味が濃くなって輪郭線がより明確になっている印象です。

ロケットなどの打ち上げ時間／期間の語義の方を先に載せていることを確認。

Shorter Oxford (2007年) では、比喩的な用法として天文や気象に特化した語義項目を立てています。

と定義していて、宇宙船などの打ち上げに適したコンディションが確保される期間で、「launch window とも言う」、という記述です。
カレンダーやダイアリーでの「空欄；空き枠」の比喩、というよりは、「窓が開いている」＝「穴､口が開いている」＝「向こう側が見通せる；向こう側に手が届く」ような場面で使われるものです。日本語でも「窓」は、内の世界と外の世界をつなぐものの比喩としても使われますから、理解はそれほど難しくないでしょう。
ただし、その「開口」の時間・期間は限られていて、比較的短いことを意味する点は「カレンダー；ダイアリー」用法と共通しています。

Collinsの一般用では、

という定義。

『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂）では次の定義と用例。

この意味が一般に拡張しwindow単独でも使われています。
近年は民間のロケット打ち上げが増えましたから、見聞きする機会も増えましたね。
最初はlaunch windowで、二回目は windowで用いられている例。

30%が好条件ということは、裏返せば70%は悪条件なので、このままでは打ち上げられないことになる公算が高いことを伝えています。

ここまでを踏まえて、さらに実例で生息域を実感しておきましょう。

スケジュールでの時間帯を「窓枠」で用いる例。

season は「季節」ですから、まだ「時」に関連していますが、次の例では、「時」そのものとは関わりのない “lockdown(s)” で「活動」を表すものとなっています。

薬の服用に関する注記でのwindowの使用例。安全・健康に関わることなので重要な場面ですが、この使用例で一読了解できない人も多そうです。

The directions recommend that adults take one pill every eight to 12 hours as needed, not to exceed three pills (600 mg of naproxen) in a 24-hour period. If one pill doesn’t adequately resolve pain, you can take two pills within the first hour (but don’t take more than two pills in any eight to 12-hour window).
