今日は気になる語法から。

have a 形容詞 spot [place] for …

です。
まずは実例。
People誌の記事ですので、ごく普通の英語表現で書かれています。

“I believe it’s our responsibility to protect all living things. Many people might have assumed he was already gone or left him in the road, but I couldn’t," she says. "I’ve always had an extreme soft spot for animals. If someone can’t help themselves, there are many animal rescue places or clinics they can call.”

「生きとし生けるものを守るのは私たちの責任だと思います。多くの人は彼がもういないと思ったり、道に放置したりしたかもしれませんが、私はそうできませんでした」と彼女は言います。「私は昔から動物にとても弱いんです。自分で助けられない人がいたら、動物保護施設やクリニックに連絡すればいいんですよ」

現在完了形＋always に慣れていない人には以外かもしれませんが､定型表現の “ A have a soft spot for B” 「AはBに弱い；甘い」は、この環境が非常に多いことを知っておくのが吉。
ここでの形容詞はsoftが使われています。

この表現は､「特別な愛情・愛着を持っている」場合にも使われるので、人であれ、ものであれ、時には「ことがら」であれ、「…が大好き；…に目がない」という日本語表現にも対応します。

The close bond between the trio is apparent, as the dogs happily rest on Keyser's lap during their break. After all, the dogs have spent most of their lives with Keyser, who said he's always had a soft spot for dogs.

三者の間の強い絆は明らかです。休憩中、犬たちはキーサーの膝の上で幸せそうに休んでいます。なんといっても、犬たちは人生の大半をキーサーと共に過ごしてきたのですから。キーサーは、昔から犬が大好きだったと語っています。

次の例では形容詞が weak になっています。

ただ、日本語の慣用表現の「目がない」も多様な生息域で用いられるので、丁寧な扱いが必要です。

目が無い

1夢中になって、思慮分別をなくすほど好きである。「日本酒には―・い」

2物事のよしあしを識別する力がない。「本質を見る―・い」

3よい機会や可能性がない。「優勝の―・い」

今回の英語表現と重なるのは、語義の1だけです。

次の例では形容詞はsoftで、前置詞 forには、ことがらで動名詞が続いていることを確認。

大学入試の語彙・語法の問題でも次の文の空所を名詞spotで補充し完成させるものがありました（便宜上､和訳をつけています）。

I have to admit I have a soft (spot) for my grandson.
正直、私は孫に弱いところがあることを認めざるを得ません。

Wisdom英和の成句の項目では用例が貧弱ですが、和英ではいきなりこなれた日本語に対応を迫られます。

OALD英英和では、インド英語のバリエーションは示すものの、語義自体は簡潔。

COBUILDはイディオム辞典でも同じ定義。

If you have a soft spot for someone or something, you feel a great deal of affection for them or like them a lot.

idioms dictionaryでもCambridgeのイディオム辞典は、

have a soft spot for sb/sth
to feel a lot of affection for someone or something, often without knowing why

と、「どういうわけか」「どうにも」といった但し書きがついています。L2の運用者のためにはこういう情報が有益ですね。

AHDのイディオム辞典では、"soft" の語義が、もともとは "tender" であったことを示しています。

have a soft spot for.
Have a tender or sentimental feeling for, as in Grandpa had a soft spot for Brian, his first grandson. This expression, first recorded in 1753 as “a soft place in one’s heart,” uses soft in the sense of “tender.”

R.A. Spearsのイディオム辞典では、 "have a weakness for" との差異を示しているが、現代英語の実例を見る限りでは、この "weakness" の語義までを、"soft point" がカバーしている印象。

have a weakness for someone or something
to be unable to resist someone or something; to be fond of someone or something; to be (figuratively) powerless against someone or something. (Compare this withhave a soft spot in one’s heart for someone or something.) I have a weakness for chocolate. John has a weakness for Mary. I think he’s in love.

米語のMW’sの学習者用辞書では

soft spot
1: a strong liking for someone or something---usually singular

He has a soft spot for children. [=he likes children very much]

She has a soft spot for chocolate ice cream.

と定義し､用例を示しています。
これが、MW’sの一般用になると、

a sentimental weakness : a strong liking for someone or something
They both have a soft spot for puppies. [=like puppies very much]

最初の “a sentimental weakness” が効いていますね。

この成句のバリエーションとして、名詞がa soft spot ではなくa weaknessとなることもありますから、本来は「弱点」＝「攻撃されると弱い場所」の意味で用いられていた a soft spot と同じ表現の生息域に a weak spotが使われても不思議ではないでしょう。

日本語では「甘い」と形容するけれど、英語ではこの定型表現で形容詞sweetは使われない、などという人もいるようです。
確かに、 “a sweet spot” というと本来が、

1. ゴルフクラブやテニスのラケット、野球のバットなどで、もっとも効果的にボールを飛ばすことができるエリア
2. 最高の結果を生む要因の組み合わせ；　有利・好都合な・幸運な状況

という意味で用いられますから、「人が何か・誰かに特別な感情を持つ」という、 “have a soft spot for” と等価とは考え難いのですが、実際には、形容詞のsweetが使われた “have a sweet spot for” が、同じ意味を表す文脈、生息域はあるようです。

上記2例は、どちらも「食べ物」で､「甘いもの」でしたから、慣用表現の "have a sweet tooth" などからの類推か、などとも邪推できますが､次の例を見ると、食べ物には限らないことが分かります。
