日向清人先生の『改訂版・即戦力がつく英文ライティング』（学研、2025年）の到着を待ち切れずに、kindle版で購入。この名著を引き取った学研さんの英断に拍手！

読みやすくなった、というのが第一印象。

副題の英語

  • A Guide to Cohesive and Coherent English Writing

がこの書の意義を言い当てていると思います。
日向先生と「つながり」と「まとまり」の話しをしてから、早十数年、
「はじめに」の冒頭で私の名前だけが出てくるので、本書を「はじめて」読んだ方は、「松井孝志？ 誰、それ？」という感じでしょうけれど、あらためて改訂版として、本書を残してくれた日向先生に感謝します。

旧版に関わることになった経緯は、過去ログでちょっとだけ書いています。

この『即戦力がつく英文ライティング』は旧版の段階で、言語研究の専門家からも高い評価を受けています。
『英語学習の科学』（研究社、2022年）の「ライティング」のセクションは新谷奈津子先生が書かれていますが、そこで有益な書籍として紹介されています。

この『即戦力…』は英文ライティングにおける「つながりとまとまり」を実感するのに最適なんですが、私が思う最大の特徴は「『練習問題＆答え合わせ』が一切ないこと」。これって、日本の教材では極めて特殊だと思うんですよ。
問題演習も答え合わせも一切なく、こういうのは好ましくない、こういうのが有り得べき英文ライティング、そういった目的に適うのは、こういった英語表現、という的確で丁寧な解説が豊富な実例に基づいてなされている、いってみれば「英文ライティングの真っ当な手続きを伝授する、宣言的知識」の教科書です。
SLAの観点で、なぜ、どのように、英語のライティング力が伸びると説明できるのか？

旧版を既にお持ちの方も、英語教育の専門家も、是非、そんな視点・観点から読んでみるとまた、面白さも増すのではないかと思います。

さて、私は私の実作。
今日の気になる語法は、「作品」に関わる英語表現。
中高段階で「作品」を教える際には、恐らく

  • work

という語を名詞で使う場合に、「労力」「作業」や「業務」の意味での「仕事」は、不可算扱い。その延長の「達成・成果」も不可算扱い。

  • work(s)

と可算扱いで使う場合は「成果物」としての「作品」という意味になる。
というような扱いをしているのではないかと推察します。

今回、気にするのは、小説や映画、ドラマなどの「作品」をどのような表現で表すのか、という部分です。

ソーシャルメディアのツイッター（現Ｘ）ではこんな呟きを見かけました。

辞書でもあまり整理されていないので、対象を明確に。映画作品のシリーズ物ひと括りが franchise。そのfranchiseでの独立した一作品がinstallment。序数やnewがつくことが多い。TVドラマでの連作は season (米)、series (英)で、その1話分はepisode。映画にepisodeを使うのは稀（Star Warsは例外的）。

今回は、これらの断片を見通して少し整理しておこうというくらいのものです。

「作品」の最少単位としての episode「話」も、その上の単位ではなく、複数話に言及するならば複数形。日本語では(X)「話話」みたいな複数形を使わないので、それこそ「エピソード」と言った方が分かりやすい可能性すらあります。
