出講先の私学の1学期の成績処理も終わり、講師としては一段落。

今回は高3のライティングの採点が大変でした。
授業で扱った「ターゲット」を含む初見の問題も入れているので、解答例の作成、採点の基準などもイチから作成。入試問題の過去問から採ってくるのは容易ですが、広く日本語の書籍を読む中で適切な素材を選ぶのは、普段から意識して文例の採取をしておかないと上手くいきません。

ただ、このような形で「自分で問題を作る」ことで、「評価（基準）」は見えてきますから、あとは老化による「眼の衰え」との戦い。これが強敵。
一問辺り、一人当たりの評価／採点の所要時間は、恐らく多くの高校英語教員が想像するものより遥かに短い時間だと思います。
でも、長時間連続すると眼がショボショボしてきて休憩を余儀なくされます。４０代の頃のように、目薬をチャッチャと注して「よしっ！もう一頑張り」というわけには行きません。回復までのインターバルが長い！

今回は、高3の答案返却当日の深夜 0時45分に採点終了。そこから、標準解答例と解説を両面印刷に収まるように編集し直し。担任へ渡すクラス概況を作成して寝たのが1時半。久しく記憶にない、目覚ましのアラーム音で5時に起床、シャワーを浴び出校準備というハードスケジュールでした。眩しいほどの朝日ではなかったので、駅まで、そして駅からの徒歩も汗まみれにならずまだ良かったのですが、これを書いている今（2025年7月12日の夜）でも眠いです。

定期試験は筆記試験で、「和文英訳」を求めていますが、この定期試験と並行して、まとまった分量のお題作文を課しています。
解答となる英文に求める要件は、巷の入試対策とはちょっと違うかも知れません。
・和文英訳でもお題作文でも「エイブン」ではなく「英文」を書く。
・まず、一読了解できることが大前提。
・General→Specificの流れで「主題」を展開する。
・事実／出来事は時系列の流れに沿って書く。
・主題として焦点化されない、接続詞 SVの「山谷」を極力減らす。
などなど。

同じコマを横並びで担当している若手の先生とは問題と標準解答例を共有しています。
今日、私が渡した解答例の英文で質問されたのは、

この解答例は、テキストの著者が提供している解答例とは全く違うんですが、どうしたらこういう英文が書けるようになりますか？

ということでした。

私はとにかく「テスト」が好きではないので、「良い英文」を書くために、「良い英文」を読み比べるということを高校生くらいの頃からやって来ました。
とかく検定試験などの外部試験のスコアや合否でしかライティング力をモニターする機会がない、日本の英語学習／指導の界隈で、何をどうやって「ライティング力」を養い、鍛え、磨き、伸ばすのか、そういったこともセミナーの中でお話できればと思います。
英検対策講座とか、IELTSスコアアップ講座ではないのでご注意下さい。

今期の、まとまった分量のお題作文は「グラフ」や「図表」に基づくもの。
必然的に、「数量の多寡」「増減を含む変化（または不変化）」「比較」を書かざるを得ないわけですが、取り扱う「変数」が複数ある場合に、

添加のalso

を使って書いていて、そこにダメ出しされる例がいつにも増して多かった印象です。

今日の気になる語法は

形容詞broad界隈

です。
形容詞broadは、

CEFR-JだとB1扱い。

本家(?) CEFRでは?
左はCOBUILDの初級でB1+からB2のレベル。右はOALD英英和で、B2からC2まで、それこそ「幅が広い」ですね。

初級と言うよりは中級以上のレベルの語ですね。
語義で気をつけたいのは、COBUILDの初級での３、OALDの3です。

OALDの定義に “a … variety of 複数名詞” が出てきました。
varietyに関しては面倒でも過去ログで確認しておいて下さい。

語義に関しては、『英語表現辞典』（第二版、研究社、1985年）ではwideとの対比で項を立てています。長いですが大事なところなので引用します。(pp.176-177)

broad, wide
どちらも「幅の広い」の意味を表わすのに用いられるが,これら2語にはその「幅」のとらえ方に違いがある.すなわち, broad は「幅の広さ」を、両端の間に大きな広がり, 面積があるととらえ,その中に含まれているものに関心のあることを暗示する. それに対して, wide は一方の端と他方の端とが遠く隔っているものとしてとらえ、その距離の大きさに関心があり, その幅の中に含まれているものに対する関心はあまり強くない.たとえば a broad door は造りの立派な幅広のドアであり,a wide door は数人並んで通れるような戸口である. 同じくa wide river は横切るのに時間がかかるであろうし, a broad river には水が満々とたたえられているであろう.
Backs, shoulders, chests, bosoms; blades, spearheads, leaves などは broad で形容されるのに対し, trousers, sleeves; eyes, mouths などは wide で形容される : a man broad in the beam (かっぷくのいい人) / have broad shoulders (肩幅が広い) / He is broad of chest. 私が付け足すことなど何もない気がしますが、わざわざこの引用をしたのは、次のような実例では、その話者（筆者）は、 “broad” を、いったいどのような意味で用いているのだろうか、という「？」が浮かぶからです。

コロナ禍の真っ只中の2020年12月のNYTの記事。

“The community as a whole never really recovered to where we were at prior to the outbreak,” said Michael Dulitz, who oversees virus data for the Grand Forks area and said the spike from college students was the primary reason for the broad rise. “There was not any other explanation.”

名詞riseはグラフで描写すれば、棒グラフや折れ線グラフで、増加の意味で用いられ、垂直方向で「上への変化」を表すものでしょう。もっとも、一つの変数に幅の広い棒を用いる場合や、箱ひげ図のような描写をすれば、その「箱」には塗り面積が見られますし、上限と下限の間の隔たりには「広さ」を感じるとは言えるでしょう。
言ってみれば

上昇幅

ということですね。

これらの “broad” は「増加・増大」の文脈で用いられているようですが、varietyで置き換えられるような「多様性」は感じられず、単に「変化の大きさ」に言及しているように思えます。

さらに類例で 2013年のBBCです。

The latest sales monitor found clothing and footwear recorded "decent" sales in August. The children's category was the strongest, due to a good start for the back-to-school season. There was a broad rise in demand for furniture but sales of flooring were "disappointing".

とあります。存在文 There was …で用いられているので、もしかすると「出現」の意味で用いられているのでしょうか？そうであれば、ここでの broadはobviousとかclearのような意味合い？
ということで、単独の（原級の）形容詞 broadの語義も、その生息域で捉えることが重要です。

そして、このような「変化」を表す broadも、当然のように「比較級」になります。
そして、近年のニュース英語では、その比較級の方を見聞きする機会が増えたように思います。

後景たるas節は、背景設定、舞台設定で、前景で焦点の当たる主節よりも「広い」

とよく書いているのをご存知でしょうか。

今回取り上げた、形容詞broad の語義にも注意が必要で、単に「上昇幅」を表すのではなく、前景に見える変化の背景にある、もっと大きな要因（とその変化）の描写に用いられていると考えるべき事例があります。特に比較級の “broader” の場合に、その傾向が強い印象。

こうして見てくると、名詞riseを修飾する形容詞としてのbroadの語義の問題、コロケーションの問題というよりも、

前景としての主題A → part of + a broader + 後景としての名詞 B

という焦点化の観点で捉え直すべき表現形式という気がします。

従来から広く見られる表現では、

part of a larger + 名詞

の生息域ですね。基本は、part of a larger whole で物理的な「部分と全体」の記述で用いられますが、比喩的な使われ方も普通に見られます。
以下は大学入試問題の読解素材文から。
