今春の入試で出題の句動詞を取り上げた前回の記事は異様なアクセス数になっていました。
いったい誰が読んでいるのでしょうか？
その記事の中でwind downの解説をしていたのですが、実際に入試の読解素材文ではチラホラ出現しているのですね。
まずは、文字通りの「時計のねじ巻き」編。
Even more wonderful to me was my grandfather’s ritual. He wound that clock with a special key each day. That key was magic to me. It kept our family’s magnificent clock ticking and chiming, a part of every holiday and every tradition, as solid as the wood from which it was made. I remember watching as my grandfather took the key from his pocket and opened the hidden door in the massive old clock. He inserted the key and wound it a little. “Never overwind,” he’d tell me solemnly. “Nor too little.” He never let that clock wind down and stop. When we grandchildren got a little older, he showed us how to open the door to the grandfather clock and let us each take a turn winding the key.
私にとってさらに素晴らしかったのは、祖父の儀式でした。祖父は毎日、特別な鍵でその時計を巻いていました。その鍵は私にとって魔法のようでした。その鍵のおかげで、私たち家族の素晴らしい時計は、その時計が作られた木材と同じように確かな存在として、すべての休日とすべての伝統の一部として、時を刻み続け、鐘を鳴らし続けていました。
祖父がポケットから鍵を取り出し、大きな古い時計の隠された扉を開けるのを私は見ていたものでした。祖父は鍵を差し込んで少しだけ巻き、「巻きすぎてはいけないし、巻き足りなくてもいけないよ」と、私に厳かに告げるのでした。祖父は決してその時計を巻き忘れて止まらせることはありませんでした。私たち孫が少し大きくなると、祖父の時計の扉の開け方を教えてくれて、私たち一人一人に順番に鍵を巻かせてくれました。
wind down はぜんまいを巻いてあった時計が徐々に緩んで行く様を表しています。
次は比喩で「緊張後の弛緩」。
Another force motivates us, and it is more primitive and more powerful than the urge to create: the force of entropy. This too is a survival mechanism built into our genes by evolution. It gives us pleasure when we are comfortable, when we relax, when we can get away with feeling good without expending energy. If we didn’t have this built-in regulator, we could easily kill ourselves by running ragged and then not having enough reserves of strength, body fat, or nervous energy to face the unexpected.
This is the reason why the urge to relax, to curl up comfortably on the sofa whenever we can get away with it, is so strong. When there are no external demands, entropy kicks in, and unless we understand what is happening, it takes over our body and our mind. We are generally torn between two opposite sets of instructions programmed into the brain: the least-effort imperative on one side, and the claims of creativity on the other.

先行文脈での relaxを受けて、wind down が使われていることがわかります。
この意味でのwind down は一語の動詞で言えばunwind でwindの反意語となります。
辞書の定義と用例を見ておきましょう。
まずはwind downでCOBUILDとOALD。CEFR表示はナシ。無印。
CambridgeとLDOCEでも句動詞には表示ナシ。
次にunwind。
COBUILDもOALDも重要語表示では無印。
CambridgeではC1表示。
重要語表示はないものの、辞書に定義も用例もありますから、学習者・運用者には有り難いですね。
同じ、「入試に出た問」でも、辞書にも（まだ）出ていないものがあります。
例えば、今春の早大・文の対話文での空所補充。
課題の準備をする学生同士のやり取りです。
元々の設問での空所がわかるように（ ）をつけておきます。
June: Hey Alex, can we talk about our class project?
Alex: Sure, what's up?
June: I was doing research for my part, but I can't seem to wrap my (head) around this concept.
Alex: Yeah, it took me a while to figure it out too. When the professor explained it to us in class, she was kind of beating ( around the bush). I remember wishing she'd just cut to the chase!
June: Yeah, exactly.
この最初の空所にheadを入れて完成させる
- wrap my head around …「理解（しようと）する；（否定の文脈で） …がよくわからない」
という成句ですが、学習用・一般用ともに英和辞典にはまだ収録されていません。
英和に収録されている成句は動詞の部分がgetで、
get one’s head around [（英） round] A
（くだけて）[通例否定文で] A＜難しい事柄＞を理解する。（Wisdom英和）
get one’s head around [（英） round] …
（通例否定文で）（口） …を理解する (O-LEX英和)
というものでしょう。
英英ではMW’sの上級版 (2016) が “US informal” という注記つきで、
wrap your mind around: to find a way to understand or accept (something)
I just couldn’t wrap my mind around what had happened.
とmindの例を載せていますが、headとの結びつきはナシ。
同辞書ではheadは次の成句で収録で穏当な記述。
get your head round
Brit:
to understand (something)
She couldn’t get her head round why he had to leave.
Cambridgeのオンライン版だと、
get your mind around sth
idiom (also get your head around sth)(US also wrap your mind around sth)
to succeed in understanding something difficult or strange:
I find it hard to get my mind around such complex issues.

動詞がgetの場合に、headを伴うことが示されていて、米語ではgetの代わりにwrapが使われることが併記されています。
Cambridgeのオンライン版は、紙版、アプリ版よりも新しい表現を取り込んでいるので要注目ですね。
米語法ということならと、マクミランの米語上級学習者版 (2002) を見てみると、
get your head around sth

to understand and accept something that seems strange
はあるものの、wrapの例はナシ。wrapとの結びつきは20年前にはあまり見聞きしない表現だったということでしょうか。
イディオム辞書を見てみましょう。
古いもので、Longman Idioms Dictionary (1998)だと
get your head/mind round sth

to understand an idea, situation etc especially when this is difficult to do
OFTEN USED IN THE NEGATIVE:

という扱いで、wrapの例はナシ。
新しめの『クラウン英語イディオム』（三省堂, 2023）では、 get one’s head around に関しては十分な用例を載せていますが、wrapに関しては
wrap one's brain [mind] around
（俗） 理解する
I just can't wrap my brain around what you say.
おっしゃることが分かりかねますが.
と「俗語」という注記つきでbrainとmindは取り上げているものの、headは未収。

COBUILD Idioms Dictionary (4th Edition, 2020年）から引用 ※比較的新しいイディオム辞典ですが、wrapに関する記述はありませんでした。get your head around something

In American and British English you can also say that you get your mind around something or in British English that you get your mind round something. This is less informal than get your head around something.

wrap の頻度が高まるのは2010年代以降ですね。米
米でもgetとheadの結びつきはそれなりの頻度で、wrapとmindの結びつきとほぼ同じ。英
一方英では、getとheadの結びつきが普通。
COCA系でgetとwrapの対比を確認。
NOWコーパスで直近までの動向を
ヒット数だけを考えればそれほど違いませんね。GLOWBEで地域差
10年前のデータとは言え、明らかに地域差あり。TVコーパスで話しことばの実態を推測
見るからに偏りがありますね。ベンチマークとしてCOCAを
米語法でwrapが使われる頻度が高まったのは2000年代以降、特に2010年代以降ですね。
通時的に見てみるならCOHAで
米語法としては、getもwrapも若い表現なのだ、ということには注意が必要でしょう。
巷のWebで出回っている「英会話」や「口語表現」を指南する動画では、このwrap one’ s head aroundが、「学校では教えない」「イマドキ」の表現であるかのように扱われていたりもするのですが、ここまで私が示した資料や検索結果を見る限りでは、かなり新しい表現であり、しかも明らかに文化差／地域差がある表現と見るのが適切／妥当ではないかと思います。
受験生に一律に理解や習熟を求めるべきものとは正直思えません。
作問者の見解を聞いてみたいものです。
