前回の記事で、「テクストタイプ別 英文ライティング 個別指導」での「ナラティブ」の課題を一つ紹介しました。所謂「小説前後」の課題です。
私のライティング指導は「ナラティブ」を基本としているので、「ナラティブ課題」も色々なものを課していますが、この「小説前後」は、グループ活動でも、個人の活動でも十分に楽しめて、かつ、英語のライティング力、それを支える語彙力、文法力、表現力などを伸ばせるものだと思っています。
この手の活動が英語学習の段階で広く行われていないのは、入試であれ、検定であれ、どこでもテストされないというところにあるのでしょう。だからこそ、個別指導では極力入れるようにしています。
文学理論としての「ナラトロジー」研究は近年随分進み、深まっているようですが、市井の英語講師がついて行くのは大変です。私は私で出来ることを続けて行こうと思います。
教材としての「ナラティブ」のテクスト、で200-300語程度のものを細々と整備しています。
小説やWEB媒体での語り、ソーシャルメディアでの投稿など、日本語の文章も拾って、その英訳を準備することもありますが、巷の文章で採取できない、し難いようなテーマ性、トピック性のあるものは、自分で書いています。
例えば次のようなもの。
10年ほど前の「某ファストフード店」での実体験ですが、簡単に振り返りまとめたものです。
最後の「意味不明」な「音」がどんなものだったか、推測してみて下さい。
はてなの「ブログ」は「ダイアリー」時代と違って、音声ファイルのみを貼り付けるのが大変ですので、外付けのものとリンクして音源を着けておきます。和訳は明日以降のブログにでも貼っておきます。
The other day, I had lunch at a nationally famous fast-food restaurant. A young woman in training was serving me. She spoke politely, and I understood her perfectly, but when a young male waiter brought food to a customer at the end of my counter, I failed to catch what the man was saying. He must have said something like, "Here is your ordered item. Please enjoy your meal. " But I could not catch a single word. I wondered if he was an overseas student with limited Japanese proficiency or he just spoke roughly.
Shortly after that, what he said to the kitchen staff startled me.
"Five more people are waiting."
That was so intelligible that I was sure he was a native speaker of Japanese.
I witnessed the moment when the contrast between language use that emphasizes explicitly stating the fact, "I am currently providing appropriate customer service," and language use that prioritizes clearly and unambiguously conveying the necessary information became apparent.
That is not the end of the story. After finishing my meal, I went to the cashier counter. Against my wish that the young woman was attending to me, the man came to the register. Surprisingly, I heard the amount of the bill he said in Japanese. I thought, "That's just as I guessed!" but that self-satisfaction was only short-lived. I completed my payment and turned around to head towards the door when a cheerful voice came from behind:
"※☆〜＊〜!"
Complete gibberish.
Amazing.

前回の記事の「気になる語法」の "seen from" の生息域に関しては、追記もしたのですが、例によってあまり反響はありませんでしたね。
英語を教える人の中でも、特にTBLTに立脚している方などには十分に考えておいて欲しいテーマなのですが、
- タスクを達成する、というときに、いったいどのようなことばをどのように使っているのか [いたのか]？
- タスクの達成に失敗した、というときに、いったいどのようなことばを、どのようにつかっているのか [いたのか]？
テクストそのものの精査、見直しが、タスクを記述し、タスクの難易度を整備するための「技の辞書」の記述には不可欠だと思っています。
新しいものばかりを追い求めていないで、足下を照らしたり、足跡を辿り直したりすることもまた大事だと思いますよ。
