Our human “limit situations” the grand Karl Jaspers*2 used to talk about are real—death, dread, disappointment. We know our English word human comes from the Latin humando, which means “burying.” The “burying” signifies not only our finitude. It also reminds us of our limits and constraints, of what Plato called Ananke*3 in the Timaeus *4, of what we run up agaisnt. Our radical finitude should accent our humble fallibility—in science and religion. (pp.94-95)
