デヴィッド・ヒューム*1の父親はJoseph Homeという――”combined the profession of law with the ownership of an estate at Ninewells in Berwickshire”(p.1)。デヴィッドも出生時の姓はHumeではなくHomeだった。1734年に彼は「砂糖商人」の事務員として就職するためにブリストルに移住し、４か月滞在するが、HomeをHumeに変えたのはその頃。”The most lasting result of his stay in B ristol was that he there changed the spelling of his name from Home to Hume, to accord with its pronunciation.”(p.4) “to accord with its pronunciation” ということは、元々Homeと書いてヒュームと発音していたわけだ。
