この「永遠の誓い（As）」はスティーヴィー・ワンダーの最高傑作「キー・オブ・ライフ」（1976）からの4枚目のシングルとしてカットされ、全米ポップ・チャート、R＆Bチャートの両方で36位という、”まあまあ”のヒットになっていますが、時間と共にいっそう評価が高まっていき、現在ではアルバム屈指の人気曲になっています（スティーヴィーの公式YouTubeチャンネルの「キー・オブ・ライフ」収録曲の中では「可愛いアイシャ（Isn't She Lovely）」に次いで2番目の再生数の多さです）。
その人気の秘密は僕にはよくわかりませんが、YouTubeを見るとGia Pepperというインフルエンサーらしき若い黒人女性が自身のポッドキャストで、「永遠の誓い」がこの世で最も好きなラブ・ソングだということで、スティーヴィー本人にインタビューしているものがありました。世代を超えてこの曲がアピールしていることは間違いなさそうです。
思えば、ポップ・ミュージックのほとんどがラヴ・ソングで、その中でも、愛を誓う歌詞はそれこそ星の数ほどありますよね。そして、その中でも「永遠の誓い」はある意味”究極”なのかなと僕は思うんです。
世界の終わりが来ても君を愛す、というのは”永遠の愛を誓う”ラブ・ソングの常套句なわけですが、「永遠の誓い」の場合は＜起こり得ないことが起こる＞事例を並べ立てて、その日まで君を愛する＞ということで愛の”永遠性”を担保しています。宇宙や自然などのスケールが大きなものに並べて、＜8×8×8の答えが4になる日まで＞なんてちょっとふざけたものも入れているのもポイントですね。
＜世界の終わりが来ても＞っていうとちょっと切羽詰まった、やや自己本位な印象もあるように僕は思うのですが、「永遠の誓い」の場合は何かに傷ついた相手をなんとか癒し、力づけたいという思いやりがモチベーションになっています。
ゴスペルっぽいコーラスとして、スケールの大きな＜起こり得ないこと＞を並べてていくと、個人の恋愛感情やエゴを超えて、もっと大きな人類愛みたいなものへと徐々に昇華されていく、そんな印象さえ持ちます。
曲調も、導入部は実に柔らかで心地よいのに、後半は怒涛の盛り上がりに向かっていきます。ひょっとしたら、この歌を捧げられてた女性も、曲に合わせてだんだんと自分の悩みなんて小さなものに思えてくるんじゃないかなんて思ったりもします。こういうのは、古今東西見渡しても、スティーヴィー・ワンダーにしかできない芸当じゃないでしょうか。
その中でもこの曲が収録されているアルバム「キー・オブ・ライフ」はそういう曲が＜めじろ押し＞で、聴いた時の至福感、高揚感という点では、ポップミュージック史上最高のものだと僕は思っています。
スティーヴィー本人は「キー・オブ・ライフ」についてこんな風に語っています。
「ただ、いい気分でやっていた。何かが起こるんだよ、今でもそうだ。ゾーンに入ったときに一番わくわくするものが生まれるんだ」
「ただ楽しくやっていただけなんだ。神が与えてくれた魔法が、僕に与えられたものすべてが、僕らがやったことの中で素晴らしく働いてくれたんだと思う。同じことは作家やラッパーや歌手―ヒップホップだろうとカントリーだろうと―誰にでも起こり得ることだと思う。エネルギーが生まれる場所があると僕は思う。そして、人はその場所に導かれていき、メッセンジャーになるんだ」（Detriot Free Press Nov.16 2014）
たぶん、楽しくいい気分だけではダメなんでしょうね、楽しくいい気分のままゾーンに入るからこそ、そこに魔法が生まれ、だからこそ聴く側も楽しくいい気分になれるのだと僕は解釈しました。
最後はこの曲の再評価に貢献したカバーを。1999年、ジョージ・マイケルがメアリ・J.ブライジとデュエットし、全英チャート4位のヒットになりました。プロデュースはベイビーフェイス。3人ともスティーヴィーを深くリスペクトしています。
ちなみに、2019年にアメリカの音楽誌「Spin」がこの「永遠の誓い」を＜ミレニアル世代が知っておくべきベスト・ディスコ・ソング30選＞に選んでいて、これがディスコ・ソングなの？と僕はちょっとびっくりしたのですが、この曲のMVを見直してみたら、ジョージとメアリーはフロアでしっかり踊ってました。。。
