今日の聴き比べは悲しき天使(Those Were the Days)です。
この曲は１９１０年～２０年ごろのロシアの『長い道を』という曲が原曲となっているようです。しかしソ連内ではこの曲は「反革命的」として政府に嫌われ、一時期は演奏が禁止されました。それでも愛好者の間では歌い継がれており、外国に亡命した人たちによっても各国に広められたようです。（ウィキペディアより）。
イギリスで活躍したアメリカの歌手、ジーン・ラスキンがこの曲の作者となっていますが、これはソ連からの亡命者によって広められているうちに作者不明の「ロシア民謡」ということになって、１９６２年にラスキンが英語盤を編曲し自作としたために彼の作品と呼ばれるようになりました。
そしてこの曲が一躍世界中に知られるようになったのが１９６８年に当時１８歳だったメリー・ホプキン(Mary Hopkin)によるヒットだったのです。この曲はビートルズが設立したアップルレコードの第１号の作品で、プロデュースはポール・マッカートニーでした。このヒットによって日本を始め世界中でカバーされ大ヒットとなったのです。
歌詞は「あの頃はよかった」みたいな感じでしょうか。高校生時代を思い出します。
