今日の「聴き比べ」は『魔女のささやき(Witchy Woman)』です。
この曲はイーグルス(Eagles)の初期の代表曲です。バーニー・リードン(Bernie Leadon)とドン・ヘンリー(DonHenley)による曲で、１９７２年のファースト・アルバム『Eagles』に収められ、ファースト・シングルの「テイク・イット・イージー(Take it Easy)」を凌ぐビルボードの９位となるヒットとなりました。
また、この曲はこのアルバムでドン・ヘンリーが曲作りに関わった唯一の曲でした。「魔女」とはゼルダ・フィッツジェラルドを、また一説ではリンダ・ロンシュタットをイメージして書かれたとも言われています。

この曲をあの「バス・ストップ」でお馴染みののホリーズ(The Hollies)がカバーしていました。というのも１９７２年のアルバム『Romany』が２００７年にリマスター発売された時にボーナストラックとしてこの曲が追加収録されました。このアルバムには既にグラハム・ナッシュ(Graham Nash)もアラン・クラーク(Allan Clarke)もいません。アランの代わりにミカエル・リックフォース(Mikael Rickfors)が加わりました。新生ホリーズです。当時この曲を録音していたとは驚きでした。
この曲はイーグルスの曲の中でも大好きな曲の部類に入る曲です。初来日の時には演奏しなかったように記憶しています。バーニーも既にいませんでしたから。
