日本で作られた酒で、世界的に最も評価が高いのはウイスキーで、最も人気がないのは焼酎だという。ウイスキーは、雑味と雑香のない、完璧な酒である。焼酎は雑味と雑香だらけの不完全な酒で、特にサツマ芋を原料とする焼酎に、その傾向が強い。
私は、以前、フランスのリキュール：シャルトリューズを、ある人のところに手土産として持っていった。飲むなり、この人は好意であるお土産を「不味い！」と言った。彼は芋焼酎を好んで飲んでいた。「完璧な酒であるブランデーをベースに構築された芸術品に対して、なんたる無礼か！」と私は怒った。（もちろん、私に対しても無礼な態度だった）
焼酎好きの人は、雑味と雑香を偏愛して、あたかもその人の人格そのものを、この不備が代弁しているかのように思っているのであろう。でもそれは悪癖に過ぎない。雑味と雑香で出来ている不味い芋焼酎が悪いのではない。そんな酒を有難がる感性が悪癖に繋がる。
私は、シャルトリューズを愛する者として、あの男の偏狭な悪癖たる自己愛を許さない。
注：シャルトリューズは、ブランデーをベースに、フランスのアルプス地方の１３０種に及ぶ高原性ハーブを漬け込み、蒸留して再びヒソップなどのハーブで香りづけされた薬用酒で、コレラの流行を防いだという武勇伝もある、手の込んだ香り高いリキュールである。ヨーロッパ文明の到達点でもある霊酒だ。そもそも、芋焼酎のごとき下等な酒と比べること自体がシャルトリューズに対して無礼なのである。

People who like shochu have a particular fondness for the unpleasant taste and aroma, and they probably think that these unpleasantness represent their very personality. But that's just a bad habit. Sweet potato shochu, which is made up of unpleasant tastes and aromas, is not bad. The sensibility to be grateful for such alcohol leads to bad habits.
As someone who loves Chartreuse, I cannot forgive that man's narrow-minded, selfish bad habit.
Note: Chartreuse is a medicinal liqueur made by steeping 130 kinds of highland herbs from the French Alps in a brandy base, distilling it, and then flavoring it with herbs such as hyssop. It is an elaborate and highly aromatic liqueur that is said to have prevented the spread of cholera. It is a spiritual drink that represents the pinnacle of European civilization. In the first place, it is very disrespectful to Chartreuse to compare it with inferior liquor such as sweet potato shochu.
