日本の右派系言論人：高山正之は中々面白い議論を展開する。その一つに、マレー半島の中ほどを刳り抜き、運河を作ろうという計画があるとのことだ。タイ国内。つまり、現在のシンガポール回り、マラッカ海峡を通る船舶航行ルートは、もちろん遠回りだし、また海賊が出没する海域でもあるので、この運河計画が浮かんでは消え、消えては浮かぶというのだ。運河を作ると、中継地シンガポール（華僑の国）が寂れるので、華僑の出身地：中国が激しく反対するので、実現できずにいると、高山は言う。
この話をブログ友に話したら、彼は「莫大な工事費を掛けて運河を作るより、海賊を退治したほうがずっと安上がりではないか。これだから右派系言論人はバカだ。」と言っていた。果たしてそうだろうか？
まず、第一に、マラッカ海峡の周囲には多くの島があり、海賊の根拠地はいくらでも設定できる。蝿を追い払うようなもので、これこそ実現不可能であろう。それより、あとでエッセイを読みかえしてみると、建設費はたいしてかからないと、高山正之は書いていた。いったん運河を作ってしまえば、船舶の航行の安全が確保され、輸送コストが大きく軽減される。そのメリットは大きい。
思いかえして欲しい、USAは国家予算の２倍の費用をパナマ運河建設に掛けたが、それによって経済的利益と、WW2において大西洋、太平洋を自由に行き来できたことによって、日本とドイツに勝利を収めたのだ。軽々に運河の建設を否定すべきではない。

Japanese right-wing commentator: Masayuki Takayama develops some interesting arguments. One such story is to cut through the middle of the Malay Peninsula and create a canal. Within Thailand. First of all, many islands surround the Strait of Malacca, and pirates can set up any number of bases there. It would be like driving away flies; this would be impossible. On the contrary, when I reread the essay later, I found that Masayuki Takayama had written that the construction costs would not be so high. Once the canal is built, ship navigation safety is ensured and transportation costs are greatly reduced. The benefits are great.
Recall that although the USA spent twice the national budget on building the Panama Canal, it gained economic benefits and was able to freely travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during WW2, allowing it to win against Japan and Germany. I got it. Canal construction should not be dismissed lightly.
