英字新聞と英語学習
ジャパンタイムズの電子版を購読して2年目に入った。新聞を読む習慣がある古いタイプの人間で、ニュースが好きなので英字新聞は英語学習にちょうど良いと思っている。
生の英語なので当然ながら難しい語彙も出てくるが、英検1級レベルの単語をある程度覚えておけば、それなりに読みやすくなると感じている。
年間149ドルの購読料
ここからが本題である。私が契約しているのはスタンダードプランで、年間費は149ドルである。申し込みをしたときは、日本の会社が発行しているとはいえ英字新聞だからなのか、決済は米ドルなのだなと妙に納得していた。
しかし最近になって、必ずしもドル決済ではなく円決済も選べることに気づいた。申込画面をよく見ると、下の方に小さくドルと円を切り替えるアイコンがある。円決済に変更すると、年間購読料は14,900円。つまり1ドル=100円の計算になっているのだ。
為替レートとのギャップ
一方で、実際の為替レートは1ドル=146円前後。この円安の状況でドル決済を選ぶと、日本円にして22,000円程度になる。さらに日本のクレジットカードで支払えば為替手数料が上乗せされ、実際の負担額はもっと高くなる。したがって、円決済にしたほうが圧倒的に安い。
ここまで価格差が出るのであれば、どちらかに統一してしまえばよいのではと思う。あえてドル建てを最初に表示させ、円決済への切り替えを小さく目立たない形で置いている点には、少し疑問を抱かざるを得ない。
支払いを切り替えることにした
もっと早く気づけばよかったが、すでに支払ったお金は戻ってこない。次回の更新から円決済に切り替えてもらえるよう、問い合わせフォームから依頼した。
残念に思う気持ちは正直ある。しかしジャパンタイムズは良質な記事が多いし、もともと149ドルが妥当だと考えて契約していた。少し高く支払ったとしても、結果的にジャーナリズム活動を応援したと思えば、必ずしも間違った選択ではなかったのかもしれない。

I entered my second year of subscribing to the digital edition of The Japan Times. Being the old-fashioned type who keeps the habit of reading newspapers and enjoys news, I think that an English-language newspaper is quite suitable for studying English.
Since it is authentic English, there are of course difficult words, but if you memorize a fair amount of vocabulary at the Eiken Grade 1 level, I feel it becomes reasonably readable.
The Annual Fee of 149 Dollars
Here is the main point. The plan I subscribe to is the Standard Plan, with an annual fee of 149 dollars. When I applied, I thought to myself that even though it is a Japanese company publishing the paper, since it is an English-language newspaper, the payment being in US dollars somehow made sense.
However, I recently realized that it is not necessarily limited to dollars and that yen payments are also possible. Looking carefully at the application screen, at the bottom there is a small icon to switch between dollars and yen. If changed to yen, the annual subscription fee is 14,900 yen. In other words, it is calculated at 1 dollar = 100 yen.
The Gap with the Actual Exchange Rate
Meanwhile, the actual exchange rate is around 146 yen to the dollar. In this yen-weak environment, if you choose to pay in dollars, it ends up being about 22,000 yen. On top of that, when paying with a Japanese credit card, additional foreign exchange fees apply, making the actual burden even higher. Therefore, paying in yen is overwhelmingly cheaper.
Given that such a large price gap arises, one would think it should be unified into one currency. I cannot help but question why the dollar price is displayed first and why the option to switch to yen is placed so inconspicuously.
Deciding to Switch Payments
I wish I had noticed earlier, but money already paid cannot be refunded. So I requested through the inquiry form that my payment method be switched to yen from the next renewal.
It is true that I felt disappointed. However, The Japan Times offers many good articles, and I originally agreed to 149 dollars as a fair price when I subscribed. Even if I paid a bit more, thinking of it as supporting journalistic activities makes me feel it was not necessarily a wrong choice.
