旅のお土産で何を買うかは、なかなか悩ましい問題である。一番無難なのは消えものの代表例である飲食物、特にお菓子だろう。余程突飛なものを買わない限り、味はだいたい予想の範疇に収まるし、すぐにお腹の中に消えてしまうので、保管や処分に困らなくて良い。

手ぬぐいがお土産として優秀な理由

次に良いお土産と考えているのが手ぬぐいである。持ち帰るときに嵩張らないし、大抵は販売地に特有のデザインなので、良い記念品になると思う。

良いデザインの手ぬぐいは飾るという選択肢もあるのだが、個人的にオススメなのは日用品として本来の用途で使い倒すことである。手ぬぐいをいくつか持っていても、使っているうちに汚れたり、どこかに置き忘れたりすることも多い。年に数回のお出かけのたびに新しいものを買う程度であれば、手持ちの手ぬぐいの中で処分されるものと新規に購入されるもののバランスが取れて、良いローテーションを作ることができると思う。

実用的な手ぬぐいの活用法

手ぬぐいの使い方であるが、私は常時1枚の手ぬぐいを持参していて、手を拭いたり、飲み物をこぼしたときの台拭きに使ったり、あるいは風呂に入ったときに体を拭くのに使ったりしている。

薄い生地なので吸水力はほどほどだが、そのぶん絞りやすいので、何回か絞って使えば、風呂上がりに体の水分を拭うくらいは1枚の手ぬぐいでも十分対応可能だと思う。

染めとプリントの違いを知っておこう

ちなみに、手ぬぐいには染めのものとプリントのものがある。染められた手ぬぐいは、生地の裏までしっかり色が染み込むのできれいで、肌触りも良いので個人的には好みである。

ただ、お土産として売られるものは安価なプリントのものが多く、生地の片面だけしか色がのっていないし、少し固いので身体を拭く用途だと少しゴワゴワするのが気になる人もいるかもしれない。

実際の購入体験から

プリントされた手ぬぐいは安価なので、決して悪い選択肢というわけではないのだが、一応、違いがあることを頭の片隅に入れておくのがよいと思う。

この写真は最近の戦利品である。こちらはデザインが可愛いのを気に入って購入したがプリントされたもので、身体を拭くときに使うとちょっと固めであった。ただお手頃な値段で旅の記念品を買えたと思えば割り切れるし、手拭いや台拭きなど別の用途もいろいろあるので、これはこれで悪くない買い物だったと思う。

What to buy as a travel souvenir is quite a perplexing problem. The safest option is consumables, typically food and beverages, especially sweets. Unless you buy something truly outlandish, the taste usually falls within the expected range, and they quickly disappear into your stomach, so you don't have to worry about storage or disposal.

Why Tenugui Make Excellent Souvenirs

The next good souvenir I recommend is tenugui (traditional Japanese hand towels). They don't take up much space when carrying them back, and they usually feature designs unique to the selling location, making them good commemorative items.

While beautifully designed tenugui can be displayed as decoration, what I personally recommend is using them thoroughly for their intended daily purposes. Even if you have several tenugui, they often get dirty or misplaced during use. If you buy new ones on each trip a few times a year, you can create a good rotation system where the balance between disposed and newly purchased tenugui in your collection is maintained.

Practical Ways to Use Tenugui

Regarding how to use tenugui, I always carry one with me, using it to wipe my hands, clean up spills, or dry my body after bathing.

The thin fabric has moderate water absorption, but it's easy to wring out, so by wringing it out several times, one tenugui is sufficient for drying your body after a bath.

Understanding the Difference Between Dyed and Printed Tenugui

Incidentally, tenugui come in two types: dyed and printed. Dyed tenugui have colors that penetrate thoroughly to the back of the fabric, making them beautiful with a pleasant texture, which I personally prefer.

However, most souvenirs are inexpensive printed ones, where color only appears on one side of the fabric, and they're slightly stiff, so some people might find them a bit coarse when using them to wipe their body.

From My Actual Purchase Experience

Printed tenugui are inexpensive, so they're not necessarily a bad choice, but it's good to keep the differences in mind.

This photo shows my recent acquisitions. I bought this one because I liked its cute design, but it was printed and felt a bit stiff when used to wipe my body. However, considering that I could buy a travel memento at an affordable price, I can accept this compromise, and since there are various other uses like hand towels and cleaning cloths, I think it was a decent purchase.
