元船乗りの桂冠詩人ジョン・メイスフィールドの、海をテーマにした詩集『Salt-Water Ballads（潮水のバラッド）』（1902年出版）に収録された詩をもとにしている。不安定で孤独でありながらなお航海を熱望する気持ちを、熱病（fever）に例えている。非常に人気の高い詩で、アイアランド以外にもさまざまな音楽家がメロディをつけている。
なお、1916年にそれまで出版した詩の総集編のような形で『Salt-Water Poems and Ballads（潮水の詩とバラッド）』が出版された。
