*1 「landlubbers」は未熟な船乗りを指す。また、「down below」は航海用語で船倉（船底にある貨物等を置く場所）。
*2 mateは航海用語ではただの乗組員ではなく「航海士」を指す。なお、セーレムもプリマスもアメリカの都市で、貿易港として栄えた。バージョンによってポーツマス、ロンドンなど語呂を踏みやすい様々な都市で歌われる。
*3 crazyは「めっちゃやばい」という意味で良いことにも悪いことにも使われる。また「butcher」は「肉屋」という意味の他に「台無しにする人・へぼ職人」という意味もある。「a crazy old butcher」とは「雰囲気をぶち壊す変人」という意味も含まれているかもしれない。
*4 船は女性名詞とされるので、「she（彼女）」と呼ばれる。

チャイルド・バラッド第289番。シーシャンティの一種であるが、労働中ではなく主に上陸中の休日などに歌ったであろうと考えられている。
割と人気のある曲で、現在でもアメリカのボーイスカウトなどで良く歌われるらしい。こんな不穏な歌でいいのか。
このバージョンでは船員たちがそれぞれの妻や恋人を思って嘆いているところへ、マイペース過ぎる料理人がずっこけるようなことを言いだすというお笑い要素が入っているが、お笑い要素を入れないバージョンも多い。
