*1 play upon(on)は「弱みに付け込んで騙す」という意味もある。英米のアニメでは基本的に料理用のおたまの上で踊るおっさんの姿で表現されている。「おたまで演奏している」と解釈することもある。
*2 penny loaf（食パン）またはpenny bun（丸パン）とは、かつて「１ペニーで買えるパン」という意味で使われた小さいパン。現在ではイギリスにおける一般的なサイズのパン。スーパーで時々売ってる100円均一パンみたいなもんか。
*3 ハギスはスコットランドの羊の臓物を主に使った煮込み料理。羊の胃袋に詰め物をする。絶対臭いやつ。

text & tune: スコットランド発祥の童謡。本来はジャコバイト運動の一環「シェリフミュアの戦い」に関連する歌であったらしい。ホイッグ党を揶揄する歌詞で、スコットランドの詩人James Hogg(1770-1835)によるものという説もある。


全身を食べ物で身を包んだキャラクターを歌った、謎めいた童謡。

スコットランドの詩人ウィリアム・ニコルソン（1782-1849）が創作したバラッドに登場するお屋敷妖精（ブラウニー）がこの名で呼ばれるので、妖精の一種と誤解されることもあるが、全身食べ物を着たキャラクターの名を逆手に取って、裸に近いボロ服を着た妖精のあだ名にあてたものであろう。
