いま読んでいるこの本に（も）、いちばん長い英単語の話が出てきました。

英語でいちばん長い（とされている）のは、有名な
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
という単語です。45文字、19音節あります。造語成分で区切ると
pneumono-ultra-microscopic-silico-volcano-coniosis
つまり、肺に関わる（pneumono）強力な（ultra）微細な（microscopic）ケイ素に起因する（silico）火山性の（volcano）塵肺病（coniosis）
といった意味。『ランダムハウス英和大辞典』には、
珪性（けいせい）肺塵（はいじん）症:非常に細かい石英などの粉末を吸い込んで起こる肺の病気;鉱夫などに多い.
▶しばしば英語で最も長い単語の一つと言われる.
と書いてあって、実在の病名のような語義を示したうえで、「英語で最も長い単語」という説明があります。
ほかにも、辞書によっていろいろと扱いや説明が違っていて、辞書の引き比べがなかなか楽しいケースでした。

まず『リーダーズ英和辞典 第3版』を見ると、作為的な造語であるとわかりますが、まあそれは当然でしょう。
塵肺症《顕微鏡で見えないほどの微細なケイ粉末･石英粉末を絶えず吸入するために起こるもので pneumoconiosis の一種; 鉱夫などに多い; cf. silicosis》. ★この辞典の中の英語語彙の中で最も長い語.【新英和大】
『研究社 新英和大辞典第6版』でも、実際に存在する病名のように書かれています。また、最も長い語としながらも「この辞典の中の英語語彙の中で」と限定してあるところに細かい配慮がうかがえます。

『英辞郎』のこの語源解説は親切ですが、「いちばん長い」云々の記述はありません。
学習英和辞典では、『オーレックス英和辞典』だけが採用していました。

pneumoconiosis（塵肺症）を参照させる空見出し扱いながら、「最長の英単語」という点は落としていません。

この辺の英英辞典にももちろん載っています。ただし、Cambridgeが『新英和大』などと同じように実在の病名っぽく記述しているのに対して、Collinsでは"obscure term ostensibly referring to"と書いている点に注目してください。この辺から、各辞典での扱いがはっきりしてきます。

ユーザー投稿のWiki形式サイトながら私がわりと信用しているWiktionary。まず、はっきりと nonce word というラベルが付いている点が秀逸です。つまり「臨時語*1」ということ。そのうえで、造語の経緯（長さを競いたくて造語しただけ）が説明されていますし、"not in official medical usage"「正式な医学用語じゃないよ～」とも書かれています。
とどめに、OEDを確認します（ODEにもこれと近い記述はあります）。
A word invented (probably by Everett M. Smith (born 1894), president of the National Puzzlers' League in 1935) in imitation of polysyllabic medical terms, alleged to mean ‘a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine sand and ash dust’ but occurring only as an instance of a very long word.

初出は1935年。パズル会社の社長さんが造語したそうで、その方の名前まで載っています。しかも、"but occurring only as an instance of a very long word" ということで、要するに「いちばん長い英単語」として話題になるだけで、実際には使われないとのこと。
こうやって複数の辞書を引き比べてみると、単に「いちばん長い英単語」という雑学のひとつとしてインプットされるだけでなく、この単語の背景までひっくるめて自分の知識になります。別に仕事に役立つわけじゃありませんけど、マインドが豊かになります。

ちなみに、Merriam-Websterももちろん引きましたが、こちらでは関連ページがとても楽しいことになっていました。
- まず、pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosisが載っている。
- ところが、189,819字ある単語もあるという。ある種のタンパク質*2の名前、化学的に決まったルールで書き出すとこの字数になるのだとか。

となって、読み上げると3時間以上かかるらしい。 - 『メリー・ポピンズ』に出てくるsupercalifragilisticexpialidociousなど、28、29、34文字の単語も紹介されている。

などなど。
仕事が詰まっていると、こんなことまでやっている時間はなかなかありませんが……
